So Boise opens up at Michigan State next year?

  • That should be interesting. Both programs will be breaking in new QBs. Who else do Boise/MSU lose?

I will give it to Boise, their 2012 OOC slate is pretty good. @ MSU, @ Southern Miss, BYU, Miami (OH). Not bad.

  • State loses 2 starters on D and like 5 on offense including most of the WR and TE production guys. Boise loses more tho, cant remember the exact number but its high like 18 starters.

It's on Friday night too, should be a good game. MSU wins at home.rockon

Tough way to start for two new QBs...should be quite interesting.

  • MSU by a ton. Boise will have to say bye bye to their 12th year senior QB.

The last time we said that their new scrawny, small armed QB showed up and went something like 39-2 in 3 years. I'm guessing Peterson will have another well equipped, well prepared QB.

    It's not just the QB.

    Boise loses their starting:

    QB (Moore)
    RB (Martin)
    LT (Potter)
    C (Yriarte)
    RG (Hayes)
    TE (Efaw)
    WR (Shoemaker)

    So that's 7 offensive starters.

    On defense:

    DE (Crawford and McClellin)
    DT (Winn and Baker)
    LB (Hout, Tevis, and White)
    S (Stanaway and Febis)
    CB (Iloka)

    10 people of defense.

    BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE.

    P (Elkin)
    Holder (White)

So a total of 19 lost starters on O, D, and ST.

MSU returns 18/22 in the defensive two deeps.

He's never had to replace 18 starters before though. Things are a bit different this time around.

As of right now, MSU has more "knowns" than Boise does, returning all of their DEs, LBs and CBs in the 2-deep from the '11 squad. MSU loses 1 of the 4 safeties that played in '11 and 3 of the 4 DTs; obviously DT is the biggest concern headed into 2012 for the Spartans.

Offensively MSU is losing Kirk Cousins, the 3 top WRs and the top TE. Fortunately the Spartans return 4 of the 5 starting OL, along with 2 other OL who started the first 3 games before both being lost for the season against ND. Essentially 6 OL with at least 3 starts return with 4 others who saw PT in 2011. MSU's top RB, Le'Veon Bell, also comes back.

So MSU basically needs to find 3 DTs and make sure RS JR Andrew Maxwell and the receivers are on the same page; the transfer of HS All-American WR DeAnthony Arnett from Tennessee to Michigan State (Hardship waiver applied for) could allay some of the passing game concerns. It's far from a perfect situation from MSU, but given that Boise is replacing almost all of their starters (and the game is in East Lansing), I have to give the edge to MSU right now.

Then again, it's January. Plenty can change between now and then.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • MSU returns a nasty defense, even with the departure of Jerel Worthy. Sending 3 new OLinemen against our guys will be rough. I think you're going to see some very sloppy play out of the MSU offense, but they'll do enough to get the W.

  • I think MSU wins. If they lose week 1, it could be a bad omen. They have schedule that could lead to the snow-ball affect. If they don't start the year strong, I could see them being 3-7 going into their bye week.

Msu will be a preseason top 15 by the time the fall gets here. No way will they lose 7 games next year

I agree they shouldn't lose more than 3-4 games max, but if their new QB plays poorly and they fail to get momentum in September, bad play could snow-ball on them.

Edit: All I'm really trying to say is that I think MSU has a tough schedule and has a small margin for error. Perhaps 3-7 is a little extreme, but bad luck seasons happen to everyone once in awhile.

No meaningful snaps, and neither has anyone else. He has a ton of potential, but there's always a hint of doubt in the unknown.

Damn. Will be pretty embarrassing if Sparty loses to a team with virtually no starters back. But Boise will be playing on the road and it will be the first game of the season. What could go wrong? shrug

3-7 would be extreme, considering you're saying that Maxwell would be so bad that it would propel us back to the 1970's, when we played 10 games a season.
