Better investment

Auburn had as much of a chance of getting Lattimore as Alabama did with Clowney. I think reasonable fans knew the whole time where both were going, with maybe an ounce of hope. but you still have people who choose to believe each team had a chance of pulling these two. But in reality they were Columbia bound long before announced.
