So the Pope is resigning...

Ignoring the obvious facetiousness of that statement, what exactly bothers you so much about change? You said once in a thread you missed the way America was in the 1950's (another topic obviously). What is so wrong with progressing and adapting and evolving?

    Never said that, not once.

I hadn't been to a Catholic service in a while til last week and a bunch of the Eucharistic wording changed. It pissed me off. Tradition is not to be messed with

Right? Me too..literally 2 weeks ago.

    Priest: Peace be with you

Me: And also with you (everyone else was saying something different!) Threww me off the whole service!

What haven't you read the thread? The goal here is numbers and influence and power. The church must do what it has to do to maintain those things. Christianity needs to be revamped man. Come to think of it the Bible is getting kinda old too, it's definitely not helping in the cool department.

I am thinking a good marketing campaign a catchy slogan and a celebrity spokesperson are in order here.

I may have taken the comment and applied it to more than you intended, but what you said was:

"Just once admit you are wrong. Society was much safer pre 1950 than today...that's a fact."

I believe someone then followed up with the statement, "If only we could go back to those days."

I remember that thread. I said something along the lines of "Yeah, I remember when racial violence was acceptable and spousal abuse was a 'private matter'"

Ah, the quaint old 50s. A simpler time, where if you weren't a white male, censored you.

  • This could be a good time thing, you obviously can't subpoena a pope but all claims of child molestation and proof there of went directly to the office of Joesph Ratzinger(now pope Benedict). Maybe, just maybe, this is a way for the church to 'unseal' these documents(because all of his stuff would be kept in the vatican vault while pope) and finally clear up all the sexual abuse cases. shrug

As wonderful as that sounds, this is an institution that covered up abuse for decades. I doubt they're going to release anything that makes them look bad, ever, unless they absolutely have to and have no possible other choice.

As opposed to these days when several armed gunmen may just decide its time to invade your home.

And I don't think spousal abuse has ever been acceptable.

It wasn't acceptable, but social norms made spousal abuse a taboo subject, thus countless cases went unreported.

FYI the murder rate was higher in 1960 than it was in 2011.

9,110 for 179 million in 1960 and 14,612 for 311 million in 2011. But by all means, keep holding onto a nostalgic view of the past

1960 is not the 50s or before so that is irrelevant to this discussion.

The fact is homicide rates today are very similar to the rates in the 1950s and 60s. The country is NOT getting more dangerous. Stop trying to twist facts to fit your argument.

2012 seems to have set a record for lowest homicide rate in decades.
