  • On here so I want to plug your brains (no pun intended). Does anyone have experience with Neurolinguistic programming and do you use it?

I went to a management seminar in which the topic was discussed. We didn't get too deep into the somewhat "brainwashing" side of the subject, but mainly the way to form a speech or even just a simple discussion so that the listener(s) get the most out of the information that you are trying to communicate.

A good friend of mine though does a lot of work in this with a law firm that he works for. They go much more in depth with it than I have ever gone and the results, if successful can be somewhat scary.

Reminds me of Frank Zappa in some ways as he used to study tones and chords that were more soothing to listeners. He used to joke that it would make his job a lot easier if he could find a way to write simple crap that just sounded good to people.

Gestalt therapy from the 1970's still making it big on the business circuit? Sales? The guys who pioneered this quit the academic research part of it when they started making a crap load of money by sucking in people who believed in it. So there is your big question. Does it really work, or does it work because those taking the seminar want it to work? Either way, you pay your money, you take your chances. These guys have been getting rich for years off of these seminars, so it's really working for them.

This is very true. Like a lot of the self-help type stuff (although this is a little different), it's all about having confidence in what you are doing or the message you are giving. These techniques make people confident and that comes through in their message, which is as powerful as anything else, IMO.

Do they still use these for sales people? I know the founders of this in the 70's got really rich. If you've ever watched Burt Reynolds in semi tough, there is a pretty funny scene in it where he goes to one of these group therapy sessions.

Psychiatrists on the academic front criticize this profusely. However, as you say, if you go into a session and come out more confident, I guess it works. The academic community will argue to the death that they have, to this day, never put together any academically sound research that says this works. - but for some, it does. That's probably proof enough. I think if you go into these sessions skeptical, you'll never get anything out of it.

It's still used often. I've seen it used in management seminars, sales conferences, and like I mentioned earlier, a friend of mine's law firm uses these tools as well in a lot of their speech training.

Like I said, technically it may not work, but if it does give people confidence then it is doing it's job.

It's kind of like that Biggest Loser show in NBC. Individually, none of them lose weight, but if you bring them together with people struggling through the same things they are and they see one person succeed, it become contageous for many. Most people just need support and counseling to help with any issue they are having.
