There is nothing worse than judgmental pricks from some podunk sect who think they are the only ones to get it right. Then they run around screaming at the other 99% of the population saying they are going to hell.

Oh look. It happened in this very thread.

    i totally agree with you

He is the embodiment of the popularized Gospel. He preaches that God wants you to be happy and succeed socially in this life. He preaches that Christ is the only way but that he's not so sure much of the time. He sermons are used nationally in seminaries for breakdowns as to what has gone wrong in the church. He appeases the flesh which preachers are commanded to share the Gospel of Christ which wars against the flesh. Many just like his message because it seems like the Christ they'd like to love. A chill guy who came to let people know it's gonna be ok, "Im waiting for you" kinda message.

His preaching is inherently unscriptural which is the very definition of false prophet. Shoeless thinks I can't say that because he preaches Jesus as God who died and resurrected. But that is only seen as not obviously true to unbelieving humans. The Bible says those are obvious facts to all those in Heaven, on earth and under the earth. Those statements aren't alone salvific.

Well excuse me for my ignorance but

    - why would you think God doesnt want us to be happy??!?

    - when is he not so sure that Christ is th only Way?? examples please

    - how does he appease to th flesh??!?

God does not act against our temporal benefit but he in no way guarantees it. Jesus essentially told all his disciples that they would be hated for the gospel, their lives would be defined by them warring against their flesh and placing it into submission of the Spirit, and tought socialism amongst the church that everyone should work hard so they can offer something to the body and to those who have nothing because they've either been robbed because of their faith or because someone doesn't work aside from preaching the gospel. You are ENTRENCHED in a culturally relevant view of the Bible.

Youtube Larry King and Joel Osteen. It's embarrassing. That's one of a number of examples. He is a life coach who name drops Jesus and people flock to hear him. That's how he appeases the flesh. The gospel is a direct affront to the flesh and the unregenerate mind. The lost find Osteen's teachings and feel a warm blanket come over them. Oh God loves me, oh he wants me to have money and temporal happiness over and above that of the eternal, oh I don't have to war against sin because Christ saved me when I wanted Him to despite my life not changing at all. How lovely.

There are tons of instances in the bible where "god" says to go to war with various other groups of people. But i'm guessing thats one of the parts of the bible that you ignore...3

If the Bible is the word of god, how can you ignore any part of it. It truly boggles my mind how you can quote one passage of the bible as if it were the most absolute of truths but on the other hand totally dismiss other parts.

weagle - I don't dismiss any part of the Bible and would be happy to answer any question you may have.

You're a non-believer so that's encouraging. You should hate my arguments. The fact you like what some of these Christians are saying is an indictment on their message. "They'll hate you on account of me"

That's the fruit of Joel Osteen, lost people file in and leave saying what a wonderful preacher he is. He makes no war with the flesh.

  • Amongst the Christians I've bantered with in this thread, do a historical perspective research on your positions. Many of them have arisen in the last 50 years. Osteen would have been eaten alive if this were simply the 1940s. Listen to some Tozer and Spurgeon. Reading only people who are alive and make money selling books in a post-modern culture is an obviously dangerous idea.

It's like the issue of "sexism" in the scriptures. It wasn't until the last 75 years did people try and paint Pauline teachings on gender roles as either "Sexist" or "Oh that's just Paul adding his opinion". It arose with feminism which is an a front to God. Yet for some reason they don't recognize what is the world and therefore are conformed to it.

Women Church Leadership|May a Woman Preach or Have Authority?

What role should women have as church leaders? May they be preachers, elders, deacons? Must they submit to authority of men, or may the preach and teach with equality?

What about luke 19:27? Or Luke 14:26?

Good question. Let's start with Luke14:26. The context is Jesus talking to those who want to commit themselves to full time discipleship. Jesus knew that the cost of following Him, as a disciple, was a heavy one indeed. He knew that His followers would be greatly persecuted, and some even killed. Read the verses following our text at hand and see that He wanted them to weigh the cost and make sure they were ready to commit themselves wholly to such a wonderful, yet difficult task. As a student of ancient greek I can tell you definitively that the word Jesus used, often translated in the English as "hate," was not a word of emotion or feeling. The greek language in very complex and deep and often the English doesn't have a close cognate to confer the true meaning inended. Rather, the word is one of comparison. What Jesus was saying is that their devotion to Him must be much more than their devotion to their families or their worldly endeavors

Luke 19:27 is simpler. The "enemies" that Jesus speaks of are simply those who refuse to recognize God as their Creator and Master. Their natural fate is one of death.

    Hope this helps.
