Do sources get paid by writers? Otherwise what does a source gain besides potentially losing their job?
I'll bite. I think it goes both ways. "Sources" can also get stories ran that may otherwise not be mentioned when they have a working relationship with the writer. I think this happens in politics all the time where stories get "leaked" to make someone look good or bad.
