Why doesn't men's water polo count in the standings?
USC wins that every year so no points there. Then you have sports like lacrosse that no west coast schools compete in.
The competition seems skewed.

It's because Stanford wins a lot of sports or competes in sports many schools don't have. Rowing, men's vollyball, men's gymnastics, fencing, water polo, men's soccer. Not all schools compete in those sports, I don't even think the SEC has any of those sports for men so it is somewhat of an unfair advantage. They still won though, so you can't fault them for that.
