    CNN graphic, a bit ago, suggested over 70% of 2011's 11K murders were with handguns. Interesting graphic given the significant mention of assault rifles in most discussion of gun control.

    A) Handguns can't be banned according to SCOTUS

    B) A 30% reduction in gun murders (theoretically of course) would be HUGE

    C) I was under the assumption that the point of most new rules anyways was to prevent mass murders, not necessarily all gun violence

    A) He doesn't control the deficit. That is Congress. The purpose of the SOTU is to give Congress a guideline of what he would like to see done. The deficit is projected to be reduced every year under current law (without any changes) until 2019 when the Baby Boomer bump is going to make entitlement obligations unsustainable. Reducing the deficit completely from a nominal standpoint isn't necessary anyways. As long as the deficit to gdp ratio is lower or a little over the gdp growth rate, the debt to gdp ratio will remain stabilized.

    B) No one is coming for your guns. Any proposal will essentially be about buying new guns (like background checks and sorts) or at worst (and it won't pass anyways) a new assault weapons ban that will only apply to new purchases. No need to worry.

    In not worried. Like I said no one touch them regardless.

    I don't know why you think this guy is the best thing since sliced bread. He has done absolutely zero to earn that status. Like I said he's my prez so ill back him but he's just gonna sit around for another 4 years. Just don't run it into the ground please.

    I think this is a huge misconception on this board. Just because people like BLF and I dislike Romney or criticize Republicans doesn't mean we love Obama unconditionally.

    I believe it was TroyTide who brought up the ridiculous notion of "worshipping" Obama. Speaking only for myself, while I like some things Obama has done, there are still plenty of things I hate about him and plenty of things that disgust me. I don't think there's a single politician alive that I could possibly agree with unconditionally.

    Ditto. Most of his economic policies, particularly the way he's continued establishing a foundation of 'crony capitalism', raising minimum wage, Obamacare, etc. are just terrible. I also can't stand the drone strikes in Pakistan (which have killed more people than 9/11), the way he hasn't toned down the military presence in the US, and the fact that he's entertaining/has already authorized the use of drones on US freaking citizens.

    It's only because most current republican presidential candidates are (somehow) actually worse that I come off as an Obama apologist.

    Just asking, is that a bad thing?. If we all round off our most extreme views, then chances are we get a cross section of what we hold dear as a country. Imo that beats the heck out of gridlock. Everybody has a hand in the course of the country, but nobody gets everything they want. It is a check and balance method that was built into our constitution.

    Not a bad thing. More like a fairy tale thing. Compromise implies weakness and people won't stand for it. Unless a 3rd party emerges and takes over. Worse case scenario as it stands now is people get to bitch and moan for 4 years and then the hope that "my side" wins is rekindled again.
