Steve Spurrier is so jealous of Nick Saban

  • mattkomp said...

UF has done fairly well since Spurrier left for the NFL..... a couple Naty's and a few wins. What makes you say it would be so different? Even this past season they were right in the hunt up until the end. Just curious as to whether you think they would have been better to have had him back...

They would have cornered the market. At least, in the East they would have. SOS has taken USCe and put them on the map when they are/were statically one of the worst SEC programs of all time. Think about what he could do with talent. Think about what he could do with his pick of whatever QB he wanted. Or whatever WR he wanted. Or actually having a defense What he would do is, win like he did in the late 90's IMO.

CUM was a good hire at the time. He did well with Tebow but he didn't do anything SOS couldn't have done IMO. CUM had UF as the premier team in the country and quit. He quit because things got tough. He knew he couldn't compete with Saban so he left. I mean, the poor guy literally almost died. Now instead of riding out that great success and using it to recruit at an even higher level, you have to transition to another coach and a completely different offense. SOS would be in his 4,000th year at UF now and have them reloading. Now, instead, they are trying to plug in players to fit a system left with holes. It has put them behind the 8 ball for a few years thus allowign other programs to catch up. They are not alone at the top of the East anymore.

Also, Muschamp will never win the SEC IMO. He was a great pull, but the guy is just not an elite SEC head coach. To be fair, though, not many are. He just isn't ready for prime time yet. SO after he leaves, that will be your 3rd coach when instead you could have had one. Now instead of winning the East every year and playing Saban or LSU for it all, you are just trying to get back to Atlanta. Basically, it has cost UF their foothold on the SEC and they might not get it back til Saban leaves.

I think in some ways you are right as far as with Muschamp, I think the run Saban is on is about as unprecedented as you can have.... look back in history and how often does a team have a run like that.... Meyer did well at UF, hard to think spurrier would have done any better, it just doesnt happen that often.... meyer won in 06 and 08, maybe staying would have netted him another but hard to say, I doubt he was concerned with competing against Saban, the SEC is stacked with very good Coaches, even UK got a bump in picking up Stoops, Vandy is improving and Ole Miss looks like they are trending up as well. Competition breeds success, One of the biggest issues in the Big Ten is the lack of quality competition and its showing in the ability for programs across the board to get top recruiting classes together.

  • Let's see....Saban has won 3 out of the last 4 National Titles. Name one Head Football Coach who isn't the least bit envious or jealous of that?

I seriously doubt though that he could have accomplished that same feat by coaching at USC instead of Bama. With the tradition at Bama, I think Spurrier could have won a title there too. Bama has the resources that any successful coach could do well with.

While Saban is not one of my favorite coaches, I have a great deal of respect for what he has accomplished. It does take a good coach to win 3 of 4 titles even at a school with the tradition of Bama, and he has done an excellent job. If he continues to stay at Bama, he will win even more.

So, had he stayed at UF he would have dominated the SEC like Saban?

  • The idea that spurrier can't be jealous of Saban because he turned down the Alabama job seems off base. If anything, I think it would add to the jealousy. He realizes he made a mistake and he can't stand to see the success Saban has had, so he feels the need to take jabs at every turn to make himself feel better. It would be very hard to turn down a great opportunity and then see someone come in and establish themselves as the best coach of modern college football.

you do realize he turned down a few top schools because he wanted a challenge. He didn't turn down Alabama or Florida b/c he wanted it to be "easy". He took South Carolina because he wanted a challenge, simple as that. Why would he mad or jealous at Saban's success when he didn't want the job in the 1st place?

  • FortWorthTide said...

Those two wins at UF came in Saban's first two years in the SEC. That's even worse than being excited about the win in 2010. Spurrier has never beaten an elite Saban team. Les Miles, Kevin Sumlin, and Ron Zook are the only ones that can say that. Spurrier lost to the only elite Saban team he ever faced.

Stupid post. You were #1 when we stomped that ass a few years ago.

Maybe because he realized he was wrong not to want it....

I'm clearly never going to convince you, but Saban did face a great challenge at Alabama. Sure, he has it easier now, but it didn't start that way. His first year we went 7-6 and lost to Lousiana Monroe. That's horrible. You can't call that anything other than a challenging rebuilding job. His second year was deceiving because we went undefeated through the regular season but folded late against Florida and didn't even show up to play Utah. That team showed its true colors the last two games of the year. Third year he won an undefeated NC with mostly inherited starters. I don't see how that doesn't look like it was a huge challenge and that he was the only one (or at least one of very few) capable of accomplishing that so quickly. I'm just saying that SCAR is obviously a challenge in a different way, but it's not like Saban walked into a peachy situation by any stretch of the imagination.

That doesn't mean anything. We were number one in 2010 also. In 08 we folded late against UF and didn't even show against Utah, proving we weren't there yet.

yeah, they sucked. 4th best All time record in the SEC, 14th best all time winning percentage in the nation. been to over 45 bowl games, 14 conference titles, 8 division titles

745–393–47 (.649) all time record and winning percentage, they were historically a terrible program.

In the 10 years previous to Saban's arrival at LSU, LSU had EIGHT losing seasons.

He won the SEC title his 2nd year on the job.

I'm not arguing Saban is a great coach, not sure what your point in is on Saban and his tenure at LSU. I'm proving the other poster wrong that LSU did have some history and tradition BEFORE Saban arrived.

1/2 of the 2001 recruiting class at LSU went onto an NFL career (12 of 26 signed players in that class). The 2003 class had 4 1st round draft picks. Saban working with scrubs I guess.
