Stoops: Sooners don't want vacated title.....

  • ... umm... was anyone offering it to you? You got sh**stomped and embarrassed in the championship game. Personally, as much as it pains me to say it, I would give it to Auburn.

Granted.... it would be pretty embarrassing to take it from USC, give it to Auburn and then have to take it away from them, but that's another story.....

  • Auburn had a chance to play USC in the first game that year and cancelled it because they didn't wont to play them.Auburn deserves nothing, because if you don't play when you have chance, don't come crying later saying you deserve something you wouldn't play for at the first of the year.

  • USC would have won that game without Reggie Bush. As far as I am concerned they are still the champs that year.

Agreed on that. He didn't just come out and say I don't want it.

    Link?

Auburn played a home and home with them in 02 and 03....I don't recall any opportunity to play them again in 2004.

The only schedule change I know of for that year is Bowling Green (Top 25 the year before) backed out of the Auburn schedule to take more money to play Oklahoma. That left a late opening in the schedule that was filled (unfortunately) by the Citadel.

PS. And before anyone mentions the 02 and 03 games with USC, they are in the context of 2002 and 2003, not 2004. Every year is different.

In 2002, Auburn lost on the road 24-17 to USC in the last 90 seconds of the game. Auburn went on to go 9-4 that year. USC went 11-2 and won the Orange Bowl. they only lost by 7 to Kansas State (11-2 that year) and by 3 pts @ Washington.

In 2003, Auburn lost 24-0 to start the year against USC. But they lost 5 games that year, including 17-3 to Georgia Tech the week after the USC game. LSU also beat AU that year 31-7. They were talented, but wildly inconsistent. USC on the other hand went 12-1, won the Rose Bowl, and won share of the national title.

All that to say, it makes no sense to compare a 9-4 AU team to an 11-2 USC team from 2002, an 8-5 AU team to a 12-1 USC team from 2003, and then pretend to know the outcome of two 13-0 teams in 2004.

PPS. For what it's worth, I don't think we deserve the title. I guess if anyone would it would be us or Utah. But we didn't play in the game, so it is what it is.

  • Auburn shouldn't get it either, considering that a player on that team admitted that he gave up his eligibility to take some cash. If we are vacating titles based on ineligible players, no one has ever one an NCAA championship.

    Chris Swanson

  • No one should get that title because no one won it fairly on the field.

Btw, penalizing OU for losing to a team who cheated isnt fair.

Auburn should have played USC that year anyways.

  • I think the point of Stoops comment was to show that at Oklahoma if we don't win it we aren't gonna take credit for it no matter what... No * (if you know what I mean)

It could have gone either way. OU and Auburn were both impressive that year.

Lol wut? That's just not true. Auburn just finished up a home and home with them the 2 years prior. Now, Auburns SoS hurt them that year when I believe a team from the Big East backed out o Auburn and they had to find a replacement in a hurry and only Citadel was available. If Auburn hadn't got screwed into scheduling them and had kept their original schedule, the computers would have put them in the game over OU. Now, maybe you're thinking back when Auburn wizard out against FSU in Tubbs first year.

What are you talking about. You OU and UT guys need to do some research before commenting (or in your case, just read the posts ahead of yours).

actually Bowling Green backed out after OU offered them more money to play. We had to pick up the Citadel

  • If Auburn would have actually looked like a title team in the Sugar Bowl, then I would say maybe. The truth is that anyone not in Auburn will always think USC was the champions of the 2004 season, much like when they strip the crystal from this years Auburn team.

Yeah. I knew it was something like that. That sucked for you guys that year. Corso also didn't help. After the SEC championship game he blasted Auburn about not deserving to play for the MNC because the second beating of UT wasnt sexy enough I guess. A few weeks before he said Auburn should play I the game. I think his 10 minute rant swayed some voters in all honesty.

I was mostly kidding, but people posted the same info I had just posted in prior posts.

As for us losing the Crystal Ball for 2010, I say that if any sanctions are handed down for violations regarding Cam Newton, 90% chance they are for Mississippi St, 10% chance AU.

We were not a championship team that year, however I do remember a 36-0 game quite fondly. The next year worked out ok.
