When the California teams like Santa Clara came out to the Sugar Bowl and kicked LSU's arse multiple times, the Sugar Bowl stopped inviting teams from the west. Finally some 70 years later in 2007, they brought in an overrated Hawaii team, and UGA kicked their arse.
So the next year they thought they could bring another western team from a 2nd tier non AQ conf. to give the SEC an easy win. But then Utah demolished Alabama and showed why SEC teams don't like playing teams outside of the south, especially away from home.
Now the Sugar turns to the depleted Big Least to give the SEC an easy win. Probably will be a real long time before a western team is invited back to the Sugar Bowl after Utah's clown stomping of Alabama.

Huh? Wasn't until after WWII that the B1G aggressively moved to negotiate a deal with the Rose that it be the Pac vs Big match-up. The Pac was going to be in the Rose regardless, so they didn't care.
