Superlative Breakdown: Running Back

Florida running back commit Kelvin Taylor tops the charts in two of our running back superlative categories for the 2013 class.

  • Arkansas needs a freak every year on offense. I think Tenpenny could be that guy if the Razorbacks can flip him.

After reading Tenpenny's update after the Bama official, that doesn't look likely. Of course, nothing would be a surprise in recruiting in this day and age.

  • This is a great feature...now we are getting into a break down of the athletes based on traits of the position. I know you guys are probably annoyed with me concerning Tyren Jones...LOL, but you really only "considered" Tyren to be elite in the category of vision? I mean with this write up you are now talking about traits that these RB's exhibit now and not so much as JC puts it, "where they project when time for the NFL draft". Can you honestly look at film on Tyren and having seen him play in person which I think you did at the Corky Kell and tell me that he does not fit your superlative list in ALL of these categories.

Just struck me as curious that you only mentioned Tyren under vision, not elite in any category, and not also considered in any other category. "Feet in the hole"...I look at your characterization of this trait and you really think there is another back better than Tyren or that Jones is not to be also considered as elite. Power & Lean? Burst & Acceleration? Same thing.

It would be a great feature if you guys did like one of the other services and did a scouting analysis on each of your top rated athletes. I would really love to see your break down on Tyren in these categories. Love what you guys do and thanks in advance for your response.

Btw, Body Type: at his official visit this weekend Tyren's measurables were 5'9 1/2" 210+ lbs.

EDIT: I stand corrected...I notice Jones listed under several categories ...although still think he is the elite one in several categories but that is barbershop argument argue

  • Hey guys do a Ctrl-F and type in "Jones" to see where Tyren is listed in other categories. Being that he'd been listed under Honorable Mention for "Vision" all subsequent listings are just "Jones".

Tyren is listed as also considered under:
    -Vision
    -Feet in the hole
    -Balance
    -Burst and acceleration

  • Also under "Feet in the Hole".....and I'm an old dude (38) but still do some footwork for conditioning such as ladder drills and jump roping. Even at my age people in the gym always come up and ask me if I am a boxer or how did I learn to jump rope like that. So I know a little about quick feet. Well.......Tyren Jones' footwork in the hole is like "WHOA" compared any RB in this class IMO.

  • Sorry, but as early as next season, you'll see that Thomas Tyner should have been given the nod for Burst and Acceleration. World class sprinters speed in a 6'1", 210 pound body. A freak of an athlete who will set an Oregon record for long runs from scrimmage before he's done in Eugene.

check the video at :54 and 2:12 to get an idea. He's not even running full speed and looks like a man among boys

  • Hands and Route Running:
Forgot this video was out there and here are Barton Simmons' comments from event

"Tyren Jones, RB, Marietta (GA) Walton – Jones was one of the most productive players in the country as a junior running the football and he has a frame with some bulk to it. Those two factors together don’t typically equate to a natural receiver but Jones is absolutely that. He runs routes with comfort, attacks the ball in the air and catches with his hands. Jones proves in the 7on7 game that he can be as much of a big play threat as a receiver on the next level as he can as a rusher."

Alabama commitment Tyren Jones rushed for 180 yards in a tough loss to rival Lassiter on 10/5/12.

  • I would think that Henry it's the definition of power and lean. He continually fell forward in under armor game.

    ReasonableDoubt

  • kelvin taylor. Is this the same kelvin taylor that derrick henry made look like a peewee football back when they played each other. Derrick Henry is better than all of these backs.

  • I'm fine with where Tyren is ranked, but I'd love to see a breakdown on what makes Alex Collins and Kelvin Taylor 5*/top 30 players and Tyren a 4* in the 60's.

I used to believe it was size, but he weighed in at around 210 this weekend at 5'9+, arguably ideal for a RB, so.. what am I missing.

Agree. Still waiting on that mystery star that was added and then subtracted with no explanation on Taylor. I guarantee if L $ U honored their offer to him you would see him at 90+ on here. Oh well, nothing new that I haven't seen before. Thanks for your work guys, I really do appreciate all your work and I'm a firm believer that you have some of the best evaluations out there.

was told by a 247 staffer that he's not going to get that 4th star anymore. A shame, but whatever. We know what we got.

We readjusted the Texas state rankings. Some guys moved up, and some down. Nothing more than that. Happens throughout a cycle, and does every year.

We like a couple of others guys better in that range.

I understand that... it was just odd to see him move from 84 to 90 one day and then that same night back down to 89 shrug I'd never seen a fluctuation that quickly before. Found it odd.
