There are four states with this rule. GA, MI, OH and I forget the 4th.

Not sure why those four havent changed.

solid rule for the South... however I remember 2-a-days in 100 degree heat and I didn't die... I remember wishing I had though

As JC said, Taco won more than he lost.

True or false? After he got toasted by the elite OL, they began matching him up against lower level talent at the event. I understand these guys are all still pretty good though. That is what it seemed like to me though.

  • Plain and simple, he showed exactly what you guys ranked him on prior to the event. He was fast off the ball and used his speed to beat OL that couldn't keep up. He really had nothing else to offer in all the 1:1 drills I saw of him. However, his athleticism is why you guys ranked him so high to begin with. I wouldn't expect him to be dropped after showing that is what he had at The Opening.

When OL were able to get a hold of him, he was usually drilled.

True or false? You are paid to evaluate high school football talent.

False. Check my post history for 2012.

Guys, I have been getting messages about Taco Charlton and his showing at The Opening because of other reports that state he struggled.

I watched nearly every rep of one-on-ones on Saturday and he won way more than he lost. He was extremely quick off the ball, has a huge frame and was one of the better defensive ends there, even though he wasn't allowed to work out in pads. My staff- Gerry Hamilton, Steve Wiltfong, Barton Simmons and everybody else that was there will back that up because they watched him, too.

I am not saying that what the other writer said was inaccurate. These events are difficult to cover, especially when you really only have one guy there evaluating players. I am not trying to throw anybody under the bus as they may have watched him in a bad rep or two. But, that's certainly not what we saw.

With that, we didn't really move him up because it wasn't like his reps were in pads. Ohio high school rules prevented him from doing the full drills.

So please don't come at us with "how can you rank him here when he had a bad showing" because the facts are that he didn't. Fact is, you can make a stronger argument about him being less than stellar in pads for his high school team than you can about Taco in a camp setting. For that reason, I understand the strong opinions on him as a prospect, but he absolutely did not struggle at The Opening and was in fact very good.

Just wanted to clarify that. Thanks for visiting 247Sports.

I only saw T.C. for a few reps, but I thought he was fine. If anything, he was quicker/more explosive off the ball than I thought he would be.

False. Check my post history for 2012.

    My question remains unanswered.

    If my question was:

True or false? You used to spend most of your time in 2012 trolling OSU boards.

Then false would be the answer, but that was not the question.

    JC -

On Jalin Marshall, was he dropped based on his disappointing 40 time?

I'd assume you are smart enough to realize that a kid playing the WR position for the first time, who is going up against the best DB's in the country, is going to struggle somewhat.

Can anyone on staff answer this?

    Thx.

Taco continues to troll the OSU fan base. I'll never understand grown men who complain about how good (or not) a high school kid is at playing football.

Notre Dame fans are trolling the Scout guys on Twitter because they bumped Taco to a 4* in their ranking update, so it's not just the OSU fans.

Question still remains what you are paid to do.

    I said "used to spend"

"Used to" expresses the idea that something was an old habit that stopped in the past. It indicates that something was often repeated in the past, but it is not usually done now.

Since you wanting to be so technical, your question was whether I was paid to evaluate high school football talent not what I was paid to do.

Not being paid to do something does not mean I cannot do it. It can also mean I had no desire to be paid to do it. At the same time, it doesn't take an expert to see that Taco was very limited in the amount of moves he was effective in using in those drills. I've said in the past I have no problem with them ranking Taco where he is based on projections and not on his current skill level. I would not have dropped him based on what I saw at The Opening either. He is probably projected a little higher than he should be, but it is hard to argue "projections" vs current abilities.

    Were you there?

No. I have watched as many clips as I could find. I've admitted in the other thread discussing Taco that I was basing my evaluation off of limited reps vs what the staff could see. However, the staff has not said one thing that goes against my findings. They just keep repeating how fast he is off the ball and that he won more battles than he lost. I agree with both those statements.
