Tale Of The Tape: ND Vs. Bama/UGA

Notre Dame will play either Alabama or Georgia for the BCS National Title. A look at how the Irish stack up from a recruiting talent perspective against the two SEC powers.

  • Obviously you look at guys like Tyler Eifert and Zack Martin and even though they didn't have the SEC offers, they've blossomed in South Bend and will be high draft picks. There are several other future pros on ND's roster that didn't necessarily rack up SEC offers, but had the Oklahoma, USCs, Ohio States etc... as mentioned in the article.

The reason why I used SEC offers as a barometer is probably obvious. They have six teams currently ranked in the BCS Top 10.

  • I'd be curious to see how many GA and Bama players had offers from ND.

  • How many players on Alabama and Georgia got offers from ND? I get why you used the SEC offer methodology, but it is FAR from a perfect measuring stick. I hate the perpetuation of using the SEC as the measuring stick for all things college football.

I'm sure both schools signed a ton of kids that ND didn't look at, either because they weren't a "fit" for the style of play, were not appropriate academically, committed early, or were not at positions of need - not to mention those who wouldn't have even considered ND.

  • It's just one way to look at it guys. Offers are not the tell all, which is why we have prospect rankings.

I definitely understand your post, and we addressed in the article that ND also beat national heavyweights like Ohio State, Oklahoma and USC for kids. We also touched on the fact that it's also about landing kids that fit your program and scheme and then developing them.

The SEC will continue to be the measuring stick as long as they continue to dominate the top of the polls.

  • Good information, however I would argue the talent gap between conferences is not as great as the polls suggest...at least not "NFL talent". Based on the NFL draft the differences between the top conferences is rather small. According to the linked article the 2011 draft:

    Overall, the SEC had 38 players selected. Here’s a look at the other BCS conference totals: ACC – 35; Pac-10 – 31; Big 12 – 30; Big Ten – 29; Big East – 22av

    http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/sports_college_uf/2011/04/sec-remains-top-conference-in-nfl-draft.html

Now a further analysis of average draft position would be needed to see if there is a big discrepancy among 1st rounders, etc.

Good info. I believe the talent gap is indeed with the guys that don't make the league. Turn on an SEC football game on Saturday and the players on the field are typically bigger, faster and stronger.

Good point. Depth is such a part of it. A couple more years and Notre Dame will have as deep a bench as anyone.

No question Brian Kelly and his Notre Dame staff are building the roster up the right way, landing many talented players in the trenches on both sides of the ball. They've also changed the culture of the program. As Barton Simmons alluded to, this is a tougher football team than Irish fans have seen in recent years.

  • I think Gerry Hamilton is smoking crack! Notre Dame defense is not good? Go Irish! WE can play and beat anyone we play!

How would ND fare in the SEC West?

    BamaTusks

  • I would have expected ND would have won the SEC West, won the SEC title and then headed to Miami.
