  • What's with all the love for the guy?

Not trying to flame, but am I missing something? Have to admit that I only watched 3 of his games start to finish, but in a couple of those I saw him abused at times and he really struggled in the Bama game and just looked lost.

Watching Bama games, I thought we went up against at least a few that were better. For example, both guys at aTm and the freshman at LSU as well.

He's extremely consistent and after watching the last two Michigan seasons in their entireties, I've only seen him beat a handful of times.

He is stellar in pass protection, but he does need to work on his run blocking. Hopefully he stays at Michigan and continues to build muscle mass and refine his run blocking.

A&M has a much better overall OL. Lewan was pretty much it for us on the OL this year. And the fact that you lost to A&M probably is a factor in your perception too.

  • He's no Jake Long that's for sure.

He's still relatively raw IMO (didn't play OL until Sr. year), but has great upside and athleticism. I agree I don't think his play this year has warranted the draft status and the accolades, but I think his counterparts playing horribly, to be frank, has been a factor in his less than dominant play.

Just to note, I didn't see the Bama game so I can't discuss his play in that game. But otherwise has been rock solid in every game, I don't think he was abused in any game. He gave up a sack early to Washington, the FR, against tOSU but otherwise held up fine. The run game didn't have much success, but our interior OL is horrid. Plus we had no RB's so OL might have looked worse than it was in actuality.

And ND game (I'm assuming those are other 2 you watched?) he maybe got beat a few times for pressures in the first half, but I don't think he gave up any sacks. We also ran the ball pretty well against ND, so I'm sure he blocked the run well.

    Anyway that's my opinion.

He called him Tom, which has nothing to do with Tom's race.

Gholston is a liar, he's proven that throughout his Spartan career.

No, he didn't. But if you guys say it enough times, maybe it'll be true!

How do you know he called him Tom? That comes from some random message board poster who just made the whole thing up, not Lewan, Will, or anyone else in earshot.

If he did, he probably was only responding to Coach Dantonio calling Mike Hart the N word.

A random message board poster has more credibility than Tom.

Hey, if UM posters can just make up what was said and their fan base will take it as gospel, why can't I? (PS! Will told me this. We are facebook friends)

Did Will also make up numerous other lies?

Such as Michigan not recruiting him which was categorically false?
Such as Michigan players were racist on one visit there by calling him Tom, after a coach has mistakenly called him Tom?

    Credibility of Tom is 0.

  • Why does Sparty have to turn every thread they enter into a flame war? Sigh..

@OP - I think mriderblue12 said it best when he stated that he is still pretty raw, as well as the only good OLineman we had this year.

Except Tom told the story himself in an interview before the '11 game.

Edit: excerpt from the story with Gholson quotes are posted below.

You shouldn't joke about Dantonio being racist.

  • These quotes from Tom come from a interview that was re-posted on the RCMB.

"I was there on a recruiting trip," Gholston said. “They were calling me Tom and junk. That messed me up. I was sitting there talking and they keep saying, ‘Tom.’ I was looking back like, ‘Who is this guy talking to, my name isn't Tom?’ After that I started coming back to Michigan State a lot.

“It made an impact. That wasn't the biggest part, but how can't you remember my name? Call me William, Will, or call me ‘2.’ That's cool, too. Not Tom. My name doesn't even start with a ‘T’. I was going to Michigan a lot. Michigan was high on my list for a while. It was like Michigan and Michigan State, neck-and-neck. They were in my top three. That freaked me out. They didn't even know my name and I had been coming up there for three weeks. I was close to going to Michigan."

    Rocket play? Suck on that.

He wasn't abused by any means.

I re-watched the Bama game a few weeks ago and the pressure was coming consistently from the middle. Lewan got beat twice in that game, and that's counting a play that wasn't even really his fault when there was a T/E stunt and the Guard failed to pick up the switch.

:Like others have said he's outstanding in pass protection, and while he's not overpowering in the run game, he doesn't miss assignments and can get to the second level.

He actually reminds me of Riley Reiff with a touch more athleticism.
