Tennessee a new talent stronghold?

With a recent rise in talent level, the state of Tennessee is becoming a new recruiting battleground for elite prospects.

  • I think the key for Dooley or the next UT coach is to sign the majority of the top talent in-state. It's hard to go out-of-state when you aren't winning big and the next couple of recruiting cycles in Tennessee are trending up.

  • It's not for lack of trying. A lot of people missed on donta Hightower, Barrett jones, and Patrick Willis. We almost lost two if our starting lineman as well to other schools, both of whom went to Nashville schools. Memphis is becoming a good recruiting base, but it is too far away for many recruits.

I agree that it is a little misleading to treat Tennessee as if they're not trying in-state but evaluating correctly is half the battle. If Hightower didn't go to Bama, he probably would have gone to Vanderbilt. Barrett Jones was a Top100 recruit nationally. Bama didn't out-evaluate anybody on that one.

Usually the schools that are evaluating well in state are doing it more because of the effort they put into to scouting the state than due to a good "eye".

Throw on Alex Watkins. He didn't turn out to be very good but fairly highly ranked. Keiwone Malone too

Sure there are others that Bama has pulled. Brandon Ivory, Jabriel Washington

  • Very true. A lot going on at the university when jones was being recruited. I think that was our transition year from fulmer to kiffin. We had three years where all of our evaluations fell behind from coaching change.

I'd say Tennessee has been at its absolute best when collecting all the talent in Tennessee. It'll get back, hopefully sooner than later so we don't waste the aforementioned opportunity that is on the horizon.

Jones was also a Bama legacy so that wasn't exactly an even playing field either

Yeah, that would have been a tough pull regardless.

  • I think Carr and Christian Morris both end up at Ole Miss.

I have never understood why so little talent from Memphis ended up at Ole Miss. I think Coach Freeze has changed that though.

  • Also, when is Dodson getting that 4th star! Watch the film, dude is a BEAST!

  • Buckeye and Gopher guy here. Just wanted to pass on a tidbit to all our friends in the south. I worked with one of Brewsters top RB's at Minnesota and asked him about Brewster.(Ole Misses ass. coach who was a disaster as HC at Minnesota) He paused and smiled then said"if you knew him you would'nt want to play for him". Brewster quickly began his tenure at Minny by loosing every game.Fired em after 3 seasons. Poor Minny hasnt recovered yet.

Brewster is at Mississippi St., not Ole Miss his son is the lead guy on the Michigan site might want to be careful with comments like that. Surprised ND didn't make the list of teams to watch we had Tate and Smith and will be in good shape should we offer Vic Warton. Josh Malone is another kid we will be involved with.
