The most decorated player in college football history -- awards-wise, at least -- can add one more distinction to his growing list of them. Te'o already has broken Charles Woodson's 1997 record of five national awards, and he will be playing for an even bigger prize next month. The senior linebacker overcame the deaths of his grandmother and his girlfriend within hours of each other earlier this season and has restored the glory at Notre Dame, which will square off with defending champion Alabama on Jan. 7. Te'o has nine takeaways (seven interceptions, two fumble recoveries) and 103 tackles for the undefeated, No. 1 Irish.

I do believe that is only for a single season. Not sure that "most decorated" applies to college career.

Great year for Teo'o. Happy he didn't win Heisman though, his year wasn't even close to Chuck's in 97, and it would have been a shame for another defensive player to win the Heisman if their year wasn't close to Chuck's.

Woodson won it because of the added special teams and offense he played. TDs = Heisman. It is an offensive award. Woodson did enough on offense and special teams to add to his amazing coverage on D to get him the award.

Woodson was also a much more dynamic player and more of a gamechanger IMO. Teo'o is a great player and rock solid, but I think a lot of his picks were more being in the right spot and right time as opposed to being a huge playmaker.
I just think ND hype, as well as Teo'os tragic personal life played a part in his campaign for Heisman as opposed to him earning it with his play. Teo'o was a great defensive player this year, but not close to Heisman IMO. I'd even say Nick Fairley's year for Auburn was more dominant and gamechanging than Teo'os.

Agreed. He got the sympathy vote for just about every award he won. Great player and he seems to be in the right spot more times than not but he's not deserving for all the awards that he got in my opinion based on stats from him and other players that others have posted.

I'm surprised Te'O got as many votes as he did. Definitely didn't think it would be as close as it was. Happy for outcome though. The best college football player won the award, not the guy with the best story on the #1 ranked team. I think the only category Te'O led the nation in as a LB was INT's. Plenty of other LB's with more tackles than him, sacks, TFL, etc.

And INT's for a linebacker often happen due to poor QB play.
I can tell you, two of Te'o's picks came against Michigan. One was a tip ball he corralled, the other was a throw in his chest on a horrible decision by Denard. I wonder how many others were the same.
