Jones missed a few games, otherwise, it would've been a lot closer because who knows the type of numbers Jones would've posted if he played every game.

He was a finalist for the Campbell Trophy for top scholar athlete. He was beaten out by Barrett Jones and his 4.0 gpa. Pretty impressive even if it was only Bama.

first defensive player since 1980. Not bad for an average LB.

Add the Bednarik to the list,

The Chuck Bednarik Award is presented annually to the defensive collegiate football player adjudged by the Maxwell Football Club to be the best in the United States. Voters for the Maxwell College Awards are NCAA Head College Football Coaches, members of the Maxwell Football Club & sportswriters and sportscasters from across the country.

The sports award shows, and the media, for much too long have focused on one conference, all they talked about was the conference as a whole. As if it was a singular, living entity, powerful only by it's shared might.

What do you know...a little private school in South Bend, led by genuine student/athlete/humanitarians is the focal point of the media..all the attention on ONE PROGRAM, and their singular accomplishments.

This is good for college football, the return of sportsmanship, and the way college sports were always meant to be.

That is real power.

Notre Dame senior linebacker Manti Te’o is officially the most decorated college football player in one season in the history of the game. His whirlwind awards tour took him to Orlando, Fla., Thursday night for the Home Depot College Football Awards, and he added two more carry-on items for his flight to New York, where he’ll travel to next for Saturday’s Heisman Trophy ceremony.

Already the recipient of national awards such as the Dick Butkus (nation’s top linebacker), Bronko Nagurski (top defender), Walter Camp (player of the year) and Lombardi (lineman or linebacker) trophies, Te’o was named the Chuck Bednarik (top defender) and Maxwell (top player) Thursday.

Before the ceremony began, he was named to the Capital One Academic All-America squad along with right guard Mike Golic Jr. Te’o broke a streak of nine straight quarterbacks to be awarded the Maxwell Trophy and is the first defensive player to win the award since 1980. Former Michigan star Charles Woodson won five national awards in 1997, which included the Heisman.

The other two Maxwell finalists were Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein and Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel. The winner of the Maxwell Award has gone on to win the Heisman 33 times.
