Texas Football: State of the Program

  • What is the state of the Texas football program and how far are they from legitimately competing for a national championship? They're obviously no more than a stellar recruiting class or two away, which is harder other places than it is there, but will CMB be able to take care of that?

    How much do you think ATM's SEC connection now shrinks the GIANT Texas pool of recruits?

    I wonder if they can bring in a couple studs from high school this February that they can plug a hole or two and be that strong Top 10 presence again that we're used to. Thoughts??

    Mack Brown sucks and Texas HS athletes are consistently overrated. Ergo Texas sucks. They need to eval talent better. Texas will always dominate ATM in recruiting. It's an immutable fact, like Mack Brown sucks.

  • I wouldn't discount ATM's SEC connection too much - especially since they're competing right now. They've dominated some games and been competitive against Florida and LSU. If that holds true, or they even beat, Alabama, then they can have some serious recruiting credibility and Texas may miss out on one or two big time recruits early. Sumlin can generate enthusiasm too.

    ATM has shown that it's not a pushover in it's new league and high schoolers will notice.

    CMB has his hands full, but he doesn't suck. I'd compare him to Les Miles. CLM took a great program and kept it there, but I don't know if I'd suggest he's improved it. CMB is in possession of a great program (everyone will have a down season or two) and won a championship with Vince Young - different than Cam Newton because Chizik can't win a soap box derby without him. CMB and CLM are both great coaches and underappreciated by their fanbases. It's tough to get a better alternative. There aren't too many Meyers or Sabans out there.
