The way I understood it he was saying that he was essentially fed with a silver spoon and handed the easy route in life unlike some other individuals. Which is absolutely true, and has been since the beginning of America.

I just don't think he had to mention race. He had a pretty good theme going about being proud to be an American and feeling the need to fulfill what that meant. He should have just stuck to that.
