The Ashley Treatment

  • From another paper in my study group I am critiquing:

here is a link to a CNN story with a decent overview... basically, the child is left in an infant-like state from static encephalopathy, which cannot be cured or fixed... so, her parents had procedures done to close her growth plates, removed her uterus and breast buds for a few reasons...

the writer's argument is a pro argument, with a major premise that ethically, the costs outweigh the risks.

From the article i got the kid was going to be left in an infantile state based upon the removal of the uterus and buds not because of the unchanging brain condition. The reasons they gave for doing such were pretty pathetic:(

I understand. The child was never going to develop. Removing developing healthy tissue/orgrans so your life is easier as an adult isn't particularly benevolent. Nps reading man. Just a problem with your attitude towards people who would like to converse about serious situations and ideas. I don't condemn you as a person for how you feel towards your groups or ideas.....i ask questions. You however choose to act like i have no idea what im talking about based upon da reedeengs. Don't get it. I like to talk about these things but this is quite the turnoff

  • To me it seems as though the parents didn't do it for the child but themselves just to make it easier for them to care for her. A disabled child is difficult to take care of, an adult even more but I don't agree with the procedures they had done.
