    People talk, names get dropped.

Pretty much any savvy black hat is going to be using VPNs and numerous other options to make themselves as untraceable as possible.. but this is the gov't we are talking about, they have resources civilians will never have access to.

The thing is, I couldn't say anything I'm not supposed to if I wanted to. I have security clearances for my current job and I still don't get informed enough about anything to slip up if I wanted to. I get assigned tasks and do it, no questions asked. I like it that way, lol!

So do you think that they know? Just curious.

Also, I'm sure it goes really deep, but how in the world can they not be tracked?

Well I showed you the access I can have to other PCs. What if I create a VPN as a proxy and trace it through 20+ other PCs. Nothing is infinitely untraceable, but damn near.

Well, I am assuming Mircosoft Security Essentials will have a bulit in firewall or no? Or will it use Windows Firewall by default? Because it is a Microsoft product..?

I know a little bit, but it is interesting to hear someone who 'really knows' , and their thoughts.

The infected PCs are generally spread world wide. tracking them all down to remove the program and also finding the source would cost much more than its worth. when you heard about anonymous knocking sites like universal music group offline this is how it was done.

ddos. using every infected computer to send rapid simultaneous packets of data to DNS servers of a website will render it useless, most of the time. They tried for a bit to take down sites like the FBI, and managed to for a few minutes before the backup servers took over.

Gotcha. I remember reading they tried taking down some government sites. My question is.....why do they even do the shit that they do?

honestly, if you're behind a router that is all the firewall you need. Just make sure some program didnt leave a bad TCP port open from PNP. Although I think you are correct about security essentials having a built in firewall, I generally disable those because it interferes with the server firewall.

    Simply put, because they can.

They help keep things in check, most of the time, and I like it. Most recently trace routing the crazy "church'' folk and revealing a lot of identities.

Prior to that, they acted against the govt and media groups for the 'anti piracy' bills which would invade a lot of constitutional rights.

There are a few 'bad eggs' so to speak, but for the most part I think they help keep things in balance. Look at them sort of like the NRA of the internet, LOL!

You don't have a server :P so no NEED to, but it wouldn't hurt you either way. All modem/router home devices have built in firewalls these days. PNP (plug n play) is what you need to be careful of. Programs send request to your router to open ports, and it does to allow them a connection, just make sure they don't leave open ports which could possibly allow malicious activity.
