What did you have for birthday dinner old man? Hope you had a good day.

A big hunk of roast beast, cheesy taters, salad, and momma's homemade chocolate cake.

3 Sam Adams Hops Tour variety pack beers, and two snorts of Jack Daniels Honey

MSU isn't a very good football program.. takes year of consistent winning to get to that level. - copemoney 1/22/13

Trying to prevent someone from taking that the wrong way. Just saying that you have to come out of the gate ready to go; starting slow against Bama is not an option, unless you have Cam Newton.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

The game between the teams suggested otherwise.

    Outgained them 299-239

Outrushed them 161-94. Including a 3.9 YPC vs. 3.0 YPC in favor of Michigan as well.

    And Notre Dame beat UM.

I fail to see how yardage is more indicative of talent level than end result.

I think a small part of it is that Bama played in the SEC championship game, while ND had the week off. The lay-off is a long time for each team, but it was 1 week longer for ND. They looked like they were working out the first game kinks in the first half.

Bama is not a team you work out your first game kinks against (that isn't meant to be a slam on UM either, just a statement).

The kinks were the only reason we lost imo. lol sarcasm

As good as Alabama was at the beginning of the season, I'd rather play them then than now.

ND is better now too. ND nearly lost to Purdue and Pitt to start the season.

You specifically referenced the front seven.

Michigan dominated on both sides in the trenches.

Notre Dame was a better team than Michigan, not saying they weren't, but talent level was very similar to Michigan.

I agree, but ND's problem isn't that they had too much time to prepare.

Eh, I'm going to disagree with you there. I take yardage into account when looking at how good teams are in their wins/losses. If you're outgained by 100 yards, but win, you probably forced some RZ TOs or got a couple of big returns.

It also depends on WHEN the yardage comes. In '09, MSU had a couple of huge pass plays to Martin in the end of blowouts vs. Wisconsin and PSU (one was over 90 yards and the other over 70). That makes the yardage #s look better than they actually were.

In UM's case, a 60 yard difference isn't something that should be outright ignored.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

I am good with it. Which thread had the ban bets?

Why don't we just ask the mods to merge the two threads? :)

Not their only problem, but Bama looked sharper. ND had the "deer in headlights" look and played like their first game.

On the recruiting front, NJ 4-star powerback Gerald Owens reached out to MSU because he liked the way Bell was used this year; just picked up an offer. He's a top 100 guy, 96 rating.

Has S. Car and Wisky offers as well.

Ok. Well they almost lost to Purdue. ND probably improved over the course of the season more than Bama simply because Golson was a RS FR starting his first games in college this year. He was pulled and replaced by Tommy Rees in several games early in the season. Bama has been this good all year long. They even lost a couple starters to injury along the way.

I do think it's significant, I think it shows that UM may have outplayed ND in several phases of the game.

It doesn't, however, suggest to me that UM has more talent than ND. Do you believe that it does?

UM has MORE talent than ND? No. They're comparable, but ND's has had an extra year in BK's system compared to UM. ND has slightly more if you look at the recruiting rankings over the last 4-5 years, but I think it's a wash at that point. ND is out-recruiting UM this season though.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

13 months still to go, but the 2014 class for MSU looks to be a special one for them. Great start, and look to be in on some highly touted kids.
