Being an automatic selection means you earned it. Being an at-large selection means you earned a top 14 ranking (or 16 in some scenarios) and can sell out a stadium.
Regardless, MSU did neither of these things the past two years.
3 years ago is another story, but not one I care to rehash.

By the way that can't possibly be a real BCS system because Ohio who is ineligible for BCS play is ranked third.

It's truly sad you guys never made it to a BCS game however it explains why you don't understand how it works.
