    In order to fire Ferentz and hire a suitable replacement, Iowa would have to shell out approximately $4.5-$6 million per year on their head coaching position.

    Oh me oh my.

    You would think that would help in some ways. There should be a stability there that you can't get anywhere else. Complaceny also though?

    Yep. Either ditch Ferentz and try to hire and up-and-comer on the cheap, or ride it out.

    Exactly. Complacency is the evil split-personality of stability. When people are so sure that they won't be fired (or if they do, they're set for life and then some), they lose that extra fire. I wouldn't accuse someone of purposefully being lazy or slacking off without evidence, but that extra edge of uncertainty can make a huge difference. Someone who is still trying to work hard can find it infinitely harder to when that motivation isn't there. Sometimes, people don't even realize that they're not producing at the same level. People who work better 'under pressure' will not succeed with a contract like Ferentz's.

    That's all pretty speculative, though. What we do know is that Ferentz isn't getting it done for whatever reasons, yet Iowa is virtually incapable of replacing him.

    Sounds like a disaster to me...

    That's probably right. He's been on a warm seat for a few years, though, so that seat might have heated up a lot more over this past season if the buyout hadn't prevented people from calling for his head.

    Definitely complacency. That 2009 team was very good, especially on defense. The DL coach went to Nebraska though, and they moved the OL guy to DL. DL wasn't that bad, but the offense was worse than Michigan State's, ranking last in the Big 10 in rushing and passing efficiency, and ranking 11th in total O and scoring O (MSU is 7th, 11th, 9th and 10th in those categories).

    Their D also didn't make many plays; 12th in the conf. in TFL and sacks.

    Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

    He would have gotten to '13 regardless. Still, last few years:

    11-2, 8-5, 6-7, 4-8. Not the type of trajectory you want to see. One rebuilding year I can see (2011). Two straight where it looks like the team's getting worse, even when you return your QB? That's a big problem.

    Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

    I know this because I had two of their receivers on my CFB team but I think they only had a couple of passing td to their two main receivers martin-manley and davis. Even Dixe Steele said it was very disconcerting how bad their passing game was when he was on our board prior to playing us.

    Top 2 guys both had 571 yards, 1 TD for Davis and 2 for Martin-manley. YPC was bad; even worse that MSU's anemic downfield game.

    Yuck.

    Bad year for Big 10 receivers overall though; only 1 guy over 1000 yards (Robinson from PSU) and not one other guy over 810! Robinson's 11 receiving TDs led the conference by a full 3.

    Double yuck.

    Face planting with a 5th year senior, returning starting QB is very concerning. Now they will have a new QB, ??? at RB, and the same for WRs. Who do they lose on the oline?

    Hyde is gone, and I thought he was their one bright spot on D. Did Jaleel Johnson play last year?

    With BOB in place, PSU will put up #'s at the receiving position.
    Michigan should move in that direction as the transition to the Borges offense takes full effect.
    Burbridge has a chance to be a special one the next couple of years for MSU.
    tOSU won't have a WR lighting up the league as long as Meyer heart is in it.
    NW spreads the ball around to much, as does Illinois.
    It will be interesting to see where Wisconsin goes from here, I am still shocked he left.
    Nebraska will be run first for the time being.
    I don't know enough about the rest of the teams to really give an opinion.
    Indiana runs a pistol?
    Minnesota pro?
    Illini???
    Maryland???
    Rutgers had Sanu put up monster numbers last year.

  • Reading SI's early bowl game NFL prospect article today, saw this:

    Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise State: Taylor watched his game take off this season, and played well beyond the expectations of NFL scouts. He's a shutdown cornerback with a feisty style, battling to defend passes or working hard to stop the run. Taylor is also player who will lend a hand on special teams in the NFL. 4th Round

    Jerrell Gavins, CB, Boise State: Gavins' skills on the field match any of the other cornerbacks mentioned. He's a tough defender with terrific ball skills. He's also constantly around the action making positive plays and does not back down to a challenge. His slight frame (5-8 and 170 pounds) is the only limitation to his game. 5th Round

    I can't believe how weak our schedule is next year.

    ND W (team decimated by losses and a home night game for Michigan)
    Akron W
    at Uconn W
    Minnesota W
    at PSU W (decimated by losses and no help coming in do to sanctions)
    Indiana W (plays no defense)
    at Michigan State W (loses almost entire offensive production assuming Bell and Sims go pro)
    Nebraska W (lose Burkhead and Martinez is turnover prone, defense plays terrible away from Lincoln)
    at Northwestern W (surprisingly could our toughest game before Ohio but we will have another year to stop their scheme with Mattison and they got owned by Gardner this year)
    at Iowa (decimated by loses and were already not very good)
    Ohio tossup

    As much as I do think illegitimate things are (and have been) going on at OSU, I don't have a much trust in Clarett either. The guy seems set on hurting OSU. There's a lot of resentment there, I think.

    So Michigan isn't losing anyone of note, like Lewan? Any concern for the running game without Shoelace? I know Gardner's mobile, but he's not quite the same guy. I'd expect a dip in the rushing production overall.

    Pretty easy schedule though. MSU in EL isn't a sure W, nor is ND. Nebraska does play like crap on the road. Indiana could give you a heart attack for a half or so lol maybe be up 24-21 at halftime before going on to lose 52-24.

    That's a 10-2 schedule on paper on the modest side. Sure W's vs. CMU, Akron, UConn, Minny, IU, Iowa. Likely W's against PSU, Northwestern and Nebraska. Probably dogs to tOSU, toss-ups vs. ND and MSU.

    Losing Lewan is big because he's an All-America. However, our RB production should get better because we'll A) practice it almost exclusively and B) should get better production from the Gs and C. Schofield will move to LT and is a pretty good player. Not AA, but good.
