The Official Michigan, MSU Thread (CLOSED)

  • Hey, just saw your score against BSU last night. Wtf? I know Izzo's slowing down, but struggling with BSU in the Bres? I honestly didn't even know they had a basketball team. FWIW Illinois looked good again last night. This year is looking more and more like the late 80s. Indiana. Michigan. Iowa. Illinois. It's deja vu all over again.

Wags you are the Barry of this thread.

    lol

Last night my man bought a locker for $2.50, and he found three colored bottles. One of them was an old "fly trap" bottle that was rare for collectors and he got a grand for it.

My youngest daughter has a friend whose dad was working for chrysler, and actually quit his job to go to these things and also to estate sales. Guy has an engineering degree but loves this. His wife works so that takes pressure off of him to score at these, but he once found a pocket knife at an estate sale he knew was worth 2500 bucks and bought it for 5 dollars. He's found speakers of certain types that he's made 3 grand on. Guy can glance at things he knows are valuable at estate sales and scoop them up. He also flips homes. Those organs that play music automatically need these round cylanders to play the music. He found 20 at an estate sale that he knew were collectors items and made 15 grand off of them. He paid 200 for them. He's amazing.

He tells us he hates going to those storage auctions in the Detroit area because fist fights actually break out and they're not as civil as we see on t.v.

I'm hooked on that show and Duck Dynasty. I feel dirty.

Well evidently we have some kind of secret weapon freshman, who, when healthy will bring us back to the final four. He's hurt now, so we're all gnashing our teeth a bit, but if it's only a sprain, we'll be light on our feet again in anticipation of another long run into the tournament. It's up to this freshman to keep all of our hopes and dreams alive though. I hope that SOB gets healthy so I can properly live vicariously through his exploits.

As far as back to the 80's/90's goes. You guys starting to bake cakes for your players again? Good for you.

Wow. Didn't know harris got hurt. Hope it's not serious. But still ... it's BSU. You should be able to beat BSU at home with half your starters on the bench. I've been looking forward to our games against you guys this year. Don't ruin it for me. At least try to make a respectable showing.

The points you two are trying to make are unrelated.

    1. Obviously players are going to have to adapt, and refrain from clearing rebounds with their elbows, I don't think Steve is arguing that.

    2. The rule is designed to prevent contact to players' head with the elbow, yet it does create an incentive for players to find a way to have their head make contact with an elbow from the other team. It effectively will cause at least as much head-elbow contact as it prevents.

    3. It is textbook basketball to use your body to clear a rebound. Swinging elbows is not what is being discussed. However, when you gather a rebound, 99% of coaches will tell you to firmly grasp the ball with both palms, with your forearms extended out, and rotate at the waist back and forth until you have room to breath. Because the player is moving within their own space, this was thought to be appropriate. Now, however, it greatly reduces a player's ability to do this, especially when being guarded by shorter players.

I think this rule is fine, as long as they start calling the contact fouls on the defense. Currently, those generally aren't called right after a rebound is gathered, and it puts the player controlling the ball in a very bad position.

    4. It should be noted that the player who Nix "elbowed" was actually whistled for a foul right before Nix "elbowed" him. The refs then reviewed the replay and elected to give Nix the flagrant 1 call, and negate the foul that happened before it (wrong application of the rule). Izzo recognized it was wrong, and walked away angrily, unemphatically (aka - with minimal arm movement, no body motion) slammed his clipboard on his chair. The refs were apparently upset by that and T'd him up (completely ridiculous). That gave them 4 foul shots and the ball when we were actually supposed to be looking at shots ourselves. When they inbounded the ball, we were immediately whistled for a terribly ticky-tack foul giving them 2 more shots.

While I think it's unfortunate that this rule will be occasionally misapplied and have several side effects that won't be addressed until next year (including punishing rebounders and rewarding floppers, aka, MSU v. WIS), I don't think MSU fans would be quite as worried about it if it hadn't been so grossly misapplied.

    2. It will cause players to stop clearing out with their elbows.

    3. I was taught that also. The problem is when players start pivoting and clearing out guys who have position. Add to the when guys like Metaworldpeace/Artest throw their elbow with an intent to injure. What this ruke gets rid of is asking officials to make a judgement call on intent. The last thing I want is for the officials to have to make a judgement call in a game vs Duke with Coach K staring down an official. It makes it black and white. Don't clear out with your elbows, and you will never have this call go against you.

    4. Didn't know that, I am sure you were pissed, but I was lol reading it. Sorry.

I think you are sorely underestimating the impact of injuries to a teams performance in basketball.

Not having Harris and Trice on the floor in this game was huge.

You're MSU, you should beat BSU with your backups. Appling, Payne, Nix, Dawson, Valentine, Costello, Kearney...

MSU had an off night, it happens. A win is a win.

Well, rest easy. Izzo>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>+billion>>>>>>>>> Belien. Izzo could probably take four special olympians and that 6' 5" chick on channel four who played for Toledo and give Michigan a good game. Didn't he kick two starters off the team the night before the Michigan game two years ago and still hung with you guys? Didn't we score like 42 points and barely lose to you at home last year, and we were shooting for the win at the end? Even if we suck, the UM/MSU game won't be a blow out. The other way happens quite often where we toy with you a bit, then win by double figures, but I don't think you'll have much to worry about as far as a "good" game. If Belien ever got past a sweet 16, I'd worry a bit, but come on, he's so J.V. it's funny. What is Izzo against Michigan in the last 25? 21-4 or something like that? I prefer to save my anger and anx for wisconsin in basketball. You guys have a cute team I hear, and will probably make it to the tournament again for what, the third year in a row? That's huge. Good for you guys.

When is the game anyway? Will have our super freshman savior back?

It was only close because Harris was out. You lose a player like that it is going to affect the outcome.

That's no excuse. A championship team is supposed to have depth to where one player doesn't mean much like when Michigan lost Trey Burke and Spike Albrecht stepped in and led Michign to a blowout win.

Tell me one team in basketball that has won a championship when their star player has been injured and off the floor?

    N. Carolina's team was a shoe in to win it all last year until injuries.

You look at Cincy losing Kenyon Martin in 99 it cost them a trip to the Final 4.

Same for NBA, you look at the Heat when Chris Bosh was out the series against the lowly Pacers was close and they were on the brink of elimination against the aged Celtics. People were calling out Lebron saying he didn't have the championship mentality.

When Bosh returned suddenly the Heat looked like a dynasty and people were wondering how many championships they would win.

Football is different, Robinson can go down and Gardner can fill in. Bledsoe goes down and Brady fills in. I would be curious to see if any bball team has had success when a star goes down. My feeling is that it probably has happened but the odds are stacked against them.

Also, re: your, example of Trey Burke speaks to one game not a season and we won last night.

To be fair, they didn't look all that great against a subpar UConn team and that was before they lost Harris. Maybe we should cut them some slack on the near loss at home to BSU. Like their football team this year, maybe their basketball team is just not very good. shrug

no offense guys, but I really think people are bothered by injuries and wins/losses if a big part of your life is how you get an identity out of the school you cheer for. These message boards obviously exasperate those feelings of joy or depression. It's great when the team you love wins, and you sure feel like kicking the dog when your team loses, but come on, it's a game. To fret over an 18 year old kid who might or might not play is beyond my scope. Whoever we have has to step up. It's why we give them scholarships. Same with the guys who hang on 16 & 17 year old kids decisions as to where they're going to matriculate. Big deal. It's like this great achievement in some peoples lives has been reached when a kid signs at somebody's favorite school. (often not even attended by said person) Then they'll scream at you "If you don't recruit, you won't win..." blah blah blah. Get a life.

I like watching the games for what they are. Sport, strategy, decisions. Sucks when we lose, but I'll be damned if it's ever changed a thing in my life. If someone gets hurt, or a bad call is made, what are you going to do to solve the problem becomes bigger and more interesting then lamenting it. Who steps up? That's the human drama that intrigues me.

I feel bad about this injury for the young man and his family. I don't feel bad for Tom Izzo or the Spartans. Do something about it. Get it done. It's why we gave you a scholarship, and it's why we pay Izzo millions. How many times have you been on both ends of a win/loss and someone is either giving you an excuse as to why they loss (injury-refs-crowned field) and you just dont' give a crap or you're the guy giving the excuse and after it still doesn't change the fact that your team lost. I'm going to watch the Spartans in the next game now. Know why? I want to see who is either going to step up for this kid, or who is going to think poor pitiful us, we have no chance at life now.

    Whens the next game?
