Had a cough for a couple weeks, would come and go. Then over Thanksgiving it got a lot worse. Went in today and he said it's pneumonia. Now i'm on antibiotics and cough syrup with codeine.

Rest up and get well, I had it about a decade ago. Kicked me in the nuts.

i'm fine with that, i've always been more of a basketball fan anyways, but what's with the teams that are mediocre in both sports? (Rutgers, UVA). I know it brings in money, but it wont be fun to watch.

The B10 will never take VT over UVA. We are academic snobs and outside of football UVA has a stronger history in most sports, including basketball, soccer and lacrosse (three sports Delany sees as great content for BTN). FWIW there is no reason for VT to be better in UVA in football either. The big difference over the past 15 years has been coaching and Beamer is coming to the end of his tenure at VT. Whoever has the better coaching over the next 20 years will be the better football program in that state.

North Carolina and Virginia actually have some decent football talent that could help improve the B1G.

  • The B1G is not getting UNC. They’re not going anywhere w/o NC State and Dook. Idc what some of their fans say. The B1G is probably not getting UVA either because they are a packaged deal with UNC, and you can’t get UNC w/o taking the other two NC schools.

IMO I think the B1G will end up with KU and another school. I hope its VT. Their fans are saying that their higher ups are having talks with both the SEC and B1G right now. Those would be solid addition’s IMO.

Basketball rivalries are not nearly as high maintenance as football rivalries. There are tons of games in a bball season, and plenty of time to schedule a rival in the nonconference schedule. With a non-regional or semi-regional rivalry, it may be a concern, but UNC's proximity to Duke and NCSt pretty much makes that a moot point.

We're not taking Kansas. It has none of the attributes Delany has repeatedly laid out. It is not an AAU member. It is in a small state (2.9 million). It brings nothing in terms of football. And it would be the lowest ranked school in the B10 academically, even behind Nebraska. The only criteria it meets at all is it is in a contiguous state and brings a national brand in basketball, but that's nowhere close to enough. We would be much better off taking Syracuse. It is better academically, has a better football brand, has a very good basketball brand and is in a state with 19.5 million residents.

And we are not taking VT. Like Kansas, it is not an AAU member and is not very good academically (it would rank third from last in the B10, ahead of only Nebraska and Indiana). If we take a school in Virginia, it will be UVA. UVA could be paired with UNC, Syracuse or GT. Alternatively, I think the B10 would take both UNC and Duke even though they are located in the same state. They are AAU members. They are very strong academically. They have great national brands, albeit in basketball. And they are in a large, growing state (9.7 million). In fact, it seems pretty clear UNC is the prime target and we would take them in a pair with any of the schools I just listed. FWIW they also would pair nicely with UT or ND if either of those caved at the last minute and wanted to be #16.

    Enjoy this while it lasts...

You are absolutely right. Drives me nuts that people think the B1G will ever disregard AAU status (other than ND), or BTN gains, as those are the two main credentials, football program success being a close 3rd.

I think that the B1G actually is positioning itself well to snag ND, interestingly enough. The ACC is clearly going to be the 5th BCS conference, and therefore will ultimately be relegated to the FBS 1-B division for football. Texas/Oklahoma are the key to this, as they give the B12 more credence than a much more traditionally stable ACC. Question is, which school from the ACC makes the B1G more attractive to ND? UNC would certainly help the B1G's national presence, even though it's bball. BC would add a semi-rival, though I'm unsure of their AAU status. And Virginia would add the DC market and a southern recruiting/market foothold.

I think that if the B1G adds UNC, it achieves it's best 'last chance' at bringing ND in, but first the ACC needs to crumble, so that no ND fans are screaming bloody murder when ND leaves the ACC. Starting rumors of taking UNC/Virginia might be doing just that. The Kansas rumors were planted for good measure; to get the B12 in gear with their acquisition of FSU/whoever. If the B12/SEC make the move that finishes off the ACC, then the B1G just might be perceived as the comfy fallback option that was waiting with open arms when ND needed somewhere to turn. This could be exactly what ND needed to have their alumni-base accept it. A national title this year would probably help them feel better about it all too, as I'm sure they'd have some added confidence about entering the B1G.

I think the real achievement would be if Delaney could add ND without adding UNC, b/c I think Virginia would actually fit the B1G better, and would better mesh with the Maryland/Rutgers/PSU 'East' sector.

  • Now that I'm thinking about it, I wonder what the 'quads' are going to look like...

I think geographical divisions would actually lend themselves to competitive balance. Let's say the B1G adds ND and Virginia. I'm also going to assume that the schedule breaks out so that each team has 3 games within their quad, 4 games with another quad (which rotates), and 1 additional 'flex' game. Normally, the flex game would be used for protected rivals, but will be assigned in years when a team's quad is paired with the quad of their protected rival.

    Leaders:
    PSU
    OSU
    Maryland
    Rutgers

    Legends:
    UM
    MSU
    Wisconsin
    Indiana

    Lurkers:
    Nebraska
    Minnesota
    Illinois
    Iowa

    Rudy:
    Notre Dame
    Virginia
    Northwestern
    Purdue

With this format, a 4 team playoff would decide the conference championship (which I believe will feed directly into the overall playoff). Therefore, as long as UM/OSU's quads don't meet in the B1G semifinals, they can play the final regular season game without having to worry about playing each other in consecutive weeks. I would suggest a Leaders/Lurkers semifinal and a Legends/Rudy semifinal..

Kansas is an AAU school. Cuse recently withdrew itself from the group.

I could be and probably am wrong but from what I have heard/read UNC and NC State are even more of a packaged deal then UNC and Duke or UNC and UVA are. UNC and NC State belong to a system, of schools.

VT fans seem to think that the B1G interest in them is legit. This is from another forum, FWIW it’s from a reliable poster who is a VT alum.

“Have been reading the past day or two that we have been talking to both the BIG and SEC pretty seriously. This is from a couple different very reliable guys; one who has a lot of connections to the BIG and Big XII and knew of a lot of conference expansion stuff last year before/as it happened. The other people are connected to the program/administration and for the past couple years just gave token answers and kinda denied anything was really happening on that front. They're saying now for the first time they are hearing of a lot of heavy discussions/negotiations and there will likely be some meetings with conference officials in Blacksburg in the coming days/weeks.”

I would like UNC and Duke but I think that ship sailed when the B1G added Rutgers’s and Maryland. To get those two the B1G would have had to added UNC, Duke, NC State, and UVA.
