I'll be honest with you, I love his music. I do. I'm a Michael Bolton fan. For my money, I don't know if it gets any better than when he sings "When a Man Loves a Woman".

  • So this should be fun....

Blue Cross just told me that my coverage ends in less than a week. Turns out they're mistaken because they have my incorrect birth year and think I'm older than I actually am. And now their call center is closed for the holidays. Blue Cross is like Comcast, if Comcast controlled my health and well-being. If anybody needs me, I'll be locked in my office, avoiding all risky behavior and taking lots of Airborne.

Sorry if anyone is in that industry, but its fu**ed up. 16 years ago my daughter was born with a high fever, we later found out it was from the epidural but they ordered all these tests on her. Put her into infant emergency for 25 hours. Not 24, but 25. She's healthy and happy and we took her home right away. However, a week or so later I get the bill, besides all the normal stuff, a 20K kicker on there was for two days in this infant critical care. I didn't have to pay it, as my blue cross paid for everything after my deductible. However, I called them up as a curtesy to tell them the hospital was billing them for 48 hours there, (two days) vs. 25 hours, one day and one hour. The lady says to me "Oh, we know, they do that all the time, it's considered a whole day if you hit 25 hours". I'm like WTF? No wonder why insurance costs are way out of line. This stuff happens, hospitals are allowed to do this (I don't know if they still can this was 16 years ago), and we all pick up that cost in our premiums. It's messed up and I don't want to get all political and Doctors deserve their pay more often then not. But it's that kind of stuff that runs up costs that drives me nuts.

I once worked on a lawsuit against a large health insurance company. This unnamed company had a habit of calling up smaller sized medical suppliers, telling them to deliver stuff to them, and then pretending that the stuff never arrived. Then the supplier has to waste time and money bringing a lawsuit to get paid. Not all of them were willing to go through that to get paid, so the health insurance company profited from this crap.

  • So, I have some B10 expansion info. I can't say exactly how I got it except it is through work and as close to being first hand related as it can be without talking directly to Delany.

Generally, a lot of the rumors are partially true. The B10 has talked to about 10 schools in the past 18 months. They have not offered those schools or voted on anything. It has been more of an info gathering exercise. And the move to pull the trigger recently on UMD and RU was definitely triggered by the ACC's expansion and increase of its exit fee. Both UMD and RU have been very high on the B10's short list for some time (going back to the pre-Nebraska days) and the B10 decided now was the time to move when the new ACC exit fee was considered most vulnerable.

As per the many rumors out there, UNC is the next major target (excluding Texas and ND, but those are deep back burner ideas and are not really getting much consideration). After UNC comes Duke and the B10 would gladly take the pair to get a deal done. After that, and this might be a surprise to many, Miami is up followed by GT. It is also considered very possible that the B10 will end up missing on both UNC and Duke in this next round and end up with the pair of Miami and GT instead.

The timing of all this is vague. They want to be at 16 by 2014, but they also want to see what happens with the UMD litigation/settlement. If that stretches out too far (i.e. into summer), the B10 might move anyway. Part of that depends on whether or not they feel they are making any progress with UNC/Duke or not. If they are making progress, they are more likely to be patient. If no progress, it's more likely they will move on quickly to Miami/GT and leave UNC/Duke for later.

Stay tuned. Realignment is far from over.

Merry belated Christmas. I hope everyone enjoyed their time spent with their families. This is my favorite time of the year with how much my family gets together.

Leaving in a few hours for Disney World/Universal Studios/Disney Cruise trip. I won't be discussing/arguing/trolling until I return on the 7th. Might check in at night to wind down and I still plan on being able to watch the Michigan BB game on the 3rd. (Dinner plans are set for 6, but the wife said I should be able to watch the game.)

Anyway, Happy New Year and be safe.

You still watching the bball game this staurday and the football game on Jan 1?

If we were going to realign then why these schools? I beleive Nate Silverstein did a piece on how little tv markets Rutgers and Maryland actually bring. All of these schools bring nothing in football besides Miami. Didn't Delaney pay attention to the demise of the Big East?

This is definitely about markets. The B10 sees expansion continuing and doesn't want to get left with dregs. The strategy is to remain out front and grab the better schools before they are grabbed by someone else (see TAMU to SEC). Also, Nate Silverstein and others can think whatever they want about expansion, but they are not in charge. Just look around. The B10 and P12 recently moved to 12, the SEC and ACC then moved to 14 and the B10 responded by moving to 14. Expansion/realignment is happening. What Nate Silverstein thinks about it is irrelevant.

I like realignment but the schools we are getting are god awful. Almost to the point where getting CMU might be better.

There are no words that can adequately describe how completely uninformed this statement is.

Football, while it is very big, is still only just part of the full picture. Academics plays a much larger role than you acknowledge, along with markets.

Adding Maryland and Rutgers absolutely does add markets, and gives a much better foothold on the east coast. Furthermore, Maryland improves our odds with UNC (and, if MrWoodson is correct, with Duke also).

Who would you rather take, Boise State? Texas Tech? Give me a break.

Expansion is happening and the B1G needs to act. The best schools aren't necessarily available, so schools with potential will be considered, especially when they bring so many additional benefits.

Miami might work. Its just weird. Shalala, or whatever her name is, I swear wants to destroy the football team down here. I would like Miami to join as I might not have to get the sports package anymore, and I could see it fitting because the president wants more focus on academics. It just seems as if it would be so disjointed and expensive to bring teams down here or send Miami into the midwest. Seems to be a lot of smoke around GT, and although the NC schools are interesting, I think they are more of a smokescreen. B1G needs to get a football school again, Miami is no longer a football school, and I think GT has been a bottom half of the ACC school, and they don't have a good basketball team either.

At this point, I'd say, meh, coffee Maybe the B1G is looking to go to 18 schools and eventual back to the big10 and other10.

Notre Dame or Texas and if they don't want to then don't expand. The markets don't matter if nobody watches their teams. That is like saying the Big Ten should offer Florida International for the Miami market.

Yeah, I would be fine with both. But it sounds like they are not all that confident they can get them. Both make a lot of money on third tier basketball rights and they would have to fold those into BTN. I also like the Miami idea, though I can't say GT really does anything for me. FWIW the materials I saw had both 16 and 18 team concepts. The 18 team one had all four of UNC, Duke, Miami and GT.
