The markets don't matter if nobody watches their teams.

Kinda does, because it allows BTN to be included in the more basic packages, which brings in a ton of money.

I'm glad we're going after BOTH UNC and Duke. That would be awesome.

Yeah, I would be fine with both. But it sounds like they are not all that confident they can get them. Both make a lot of money on third tier basketball rights and they would have to fold those into BTN. I also like the Miami idea, though I can't say GT really does anything for me. FWIW the materials I saw had both 16 and 18 team concepts. The 18 team one had all four of UNC, Duke, Miami and GT.

Then why don't we add Middle Tennessee State for the Nashville market. Why isn't the Big East swimming in money with Philly, NYC, Washington DC, Tampa, Boston, Cincy, Pittsburgh and Louisville all in their footprint.

So, I have some B10 expansion info. I can't say exactly how I got it except it is through work and as close to being first hand related as it can be without talking directly to Delany.

Generally, a lot of the rumors are partially true. The B10 has talked to about 10 schools in the past 18 months. They have not offered those schools or voted on anything. It has been more of an info gathering exercise. And the move to pull the trigger recently on UMD and RU was definitely triggered by the ACC's expansion and increase of its exit fee. Both UMD and RU have been very high on the B10's short list for some time (going back to the pre-Nebraska days) and the B10 decided now was the time to move when the new ACC exit fee was considered most vulnerable.

As per the many rumors out there, UNC is the next major target (excluding Texas and ND, but those are deep back burner ideas and are not really getting much consideration). After UNC comes Duke and the B10 would gladly take the pair to get a deal done. After that, and this might be a surprise to many, Miami is up followed by GT. It is also considered very possible that the B10 will end up missing on both UNC and Duke in this next round and end up with the pair of Miami and GT instead.

The timing of all this is vague. They want to be at 16 by 2014, but they also want to see what happens with the UMD litigation/settlement. If that stretches out too far (i.e. into summer), the B10 might move anyway. Part of that depends on whether or not they feel they are making any progress with UNC/Duke or not. If they are making progress, they are more likely to be patient. If no progress, it's more likely they will move on quickly to Miami/GT and leave UNC/Duke for later.

Stay tuned. Realignment is far from over.

I’d like Miami and GT. GT has a lot of potential. Their kind of like TAMU before they joined the SEC.

Seeing games in Miami and Atlanta would be dope too.

  • Also, MrWoodson so the UVA stuff just a Internet rumor? I know it's a great school and everything but I never understood why the B1G wanted UVA when it already has UMD. Isn't it basically the same market?

No one in NYC gives a hoot about CFB, and that goes for most of the eastern sea board. We like pro sports out here.

UVA was listed, but much lower than I expected. Schools were grouped as Tier 1 and Tier 2. UVA was in Tier 2 with schools like Syracuse, Pitt, BC and Mizzou. Tier 1 had UNC, Duke, GT and Miami.

I don't believe the numbers at the end are random.

88 is the last year MSU played in a BCS game.

93 is probably the year you were born.

7 is what George Costanza wanted to name his kid.

    IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW.

Not that it matters one iota anymore, but at least was this list put together with the illusion of academics? I know all of our schools have semi pro teams now, and we don't really give a crap about the, just win and whatever happens to you after four years good luck, but sometimes presidents insist on that illusion.

I know you young pups are very excited about this. I understand as a business owner, if you're standing still, you're falling behind. I get that. But as an old man remember the great ones like Bo, Woody, Duffy. 1 p.m. starts, and taking northwestern as seriously as OSU, I think this just blows.

What's happening to CFB now is the same as what happened to hockey in the early 90's. That was a beautiful sport prior to all the unnecessary tinkering done by the greed heads at the top trying to milk the sport for more money.

NHL blows these days, it's a completely watered down version of the sport now.

All the B10 is doing is complete dilution. You can add any team you want, it isn't going to improve the season in any shape or form.

Just looking at the names and listening to Delany, you have to assume it was. I was not involved in it.

Idk. I think the hand-wringing is overblown. Seriously, what's the difference between playing 8 B10 opponents plus 1 high profile OOC AQ opponent plus 3 meh baby seals (2 of which usually are just a regular rotation of the same MAC teams over and over) and playing 9 B10 opponents (1 of which is UMD, RU, UNC or GT) plus 1 high profile OOC AQ team plus 2 meh baby seals?

They're entirely different situations. And FWIW the NFL has expanded and reorganized its divisions multiple times and is doing fine. The NHL has always had issues. Hockey is a niche sport, yet the NHL acts like it's as mainstream as football, basketball and baseball. It's not. People in Florida and Texas and California and Georgia couldn't care less about it and that has nothing to do with reorganizing divisions.

There is no factual basis for that statement. New Jersey and Maryland are not materially different than the rest of the country when it comes to sports. Neither has ever had an instate powerhouse college football program to root for, but there is no reason to think they would act any differently than residents of most other states if they did. In every sport, fanbases are significantly energized by winning. Just like Oregon and BSU and Louisville, if Rutgers and UMD start winning they will have plenty of local fans. And just like Syracuse and Pitt and even Miami, if they fail to put a winning product on the field the fans will stop showing up. Football, unlike hockey, is a national sport.

There are no good CFB programs on the eastern seaboard. The biggest stadium on the eastern seaboard is Maryland at 54,000 which would be one of the smallest stadiums in the Big Ten or SEC. If they got fan support, there would at least be a stadium or two that seated 70 or 80K.

Army. Syracuse. Harvard. Princeton. Where do you think college football came from? It's simply a question of having a winning program. What is the size of Autzen Stadium in Oregon? How about Stanford's stadium? Do they not play good football? Would the addition of Stanford and Oregon to the B10 be equally stupid if they were geographically contiguous? And if we are going by stadium size, you might as well dump half of the teams currently in the B10. Most are under 65,000 and they don't come close to filling them up. Show me a winning program and I will show you a full stadium and strong TV ratings. It has nothing to do with what state you are in.

There are no winning program on the eastern seaboard though. Syracuse, Rutgers, Maryland, Uconn etc. are all up and down programs that are mostly down.

Granted. But there used to be and those teams were among the most popular in the country. And today there are plenty of winning HS programs. And plenty of winning NFL franchises. People in the NE love football as much as the rest of the country. They just need winning teams to root for, like the rest of us. If Rutgers and UMD languish in the bottom half of the B10, they will be no more popular than Purdue or Minnesota or Indiana football. But if they are competitive on a regular basis, they will have plenty of fans.
