It's mainly because I think we need more depth and more talent overall. Also, we need a few players who can be game changers on both sides of the ball. I think Dymonte Thomas is that kind of player, but we need a few more guys like Malik McDowell and Damon Webb who have the potential to be elite at their position once they've been on campus for a couple of years.

I'm curious State fans, do you think Narduzzi will get looks for a head coaching job? I know there was talk about heading to A&M as a coordinator but that obviously didn't happen. Is he now set at State?
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

We had a hell of a time containing NW's rushing game on the edge. They were holding all day but I don't think we got a single holding penalty until the 4th QTR. And Siemien was throwing darts. You guys really need to be on your A game defensively. It's a dangerous team to defend against. If you can get your rushing game going and keep their offense off the field, that should help a lot. With Denard out, our rushing game was predictably poor. Most of our best rushing plays were scrambles by Gardner.

Yea, our guys looked a half step slow the whole game vs. Nebraska. Pass D broke down late, but MSU also had their 4th and 5th string safeties playing on the final drive at the FS and nickel spots due to injuries. Still held Martinez to under 50% passing, 2 TDs and 3 INTs.
Mark is a legit RB; I consider Northwestern's Colter/Mark to be about 90-95% of T-Mart/Abdullah. Less TO prone though, which can be problematic.
Nice to play them off of a bye; gets some of MSU's legs back.
I think it'll be a relatively high scoring game; MSU's OL has looked better in the last 2 games and is still healthy (longest stretch for the starting 5 to be together all season . . . which is crazy). Northwestern seems bad against the pass, and I think MSU can have success passing to set up the run. I also would be shocked if MSU held Northwestern under 21-24 points; these fast-paced spreads with quick QBs are just a pain in the rear for MSU.

NW is bad against the pass. My only concern with passing a lot is that it does not chew up enough clock and a incomplete pass or two can result in a quick three and out. You are much better off running if you can (we couldn't). If you pass a lot and it causes you to keep giving the ball back to NW without taking much time off the clock, you will regret it. Their offense is dangerous.

I'm more thinking of hitting a 15 yard crossing route on the first play, then running a screen for 5-6 yards, THEN running. Not saying Maxwell should throw it 45 times
. Their LBs seem pretty solid at keeping their gaps, so I'd like to back them off the LOS a little bit. Then again, running Lawrence Thomas at them seemed to work very well against Nebraska . . . he may end up at FB/H-back full time.
I'd like to see a little more of Nick Hill. He had 2 carries for 30 yards against Nebraska and could really provide some burst. MSU has been dying for a #2 RB option, even if he only gets 7-9 carries/game.
I gotta say, interior pass pro improved a ton once Treadwell was able to play LG full time. Jack Allen is much more comfortable at C. Glad to see France able to handle a speed rusher (Eric Maritin) and MSU didn't give up a sack vs. Nebraska. Now Northwestern has a nice pair of DEs too, so I'd like to see some strong play against them before I annoint the OL officially slightly below average, up from cover your eyes awful

Yea, he consistently trolls. Like the subtle jab that winning in Spartan Stadium is "a joke" after they win by 2 points at home? They get bragging rights for a year, but I don't think either fanbase can call a road game a "gimmee" in this rivalry.

I think Gardner has potentially answered the QB question for next year, but I would still wonder about both lines, RB, and WR.
Lewan would help definitely, but it'll be an overall inexperienced group even with him. Without him, the group could really struggle.
If all of this holds water, then the team will be asking Gardner to do a lot, and potentially with bad protection. That's a recipe for injury, so how comfortable are you with Morris/Bellamy?
Ultimately, I think Gardner's size will help, along with him having been able to get on the field this year. But I still wonder who he will be throwing/handing the ball to.

OL looked solid against Nebraska. Not sure if it's their awful run defense, or if its because they were all healthy. Roushar said it's the first time all 5 OL practiced together all week since the CMU game.

What do you expect me to say? I'm telling the truth when I say our hardest games are at home. Playing a 5-5 team on the road is supposed to be one of the hardest games? If that's the case then I will be upset if we don't go 11-0 to start the season.

You display a lot of faith, which makes sense because you're a fan. Pardon me if I still wonder.
You have 2/3 of an ineffective RB group returning.
Roundtree might be the only senior, but him and Gardner are arguably your 2 best WR's. You say you like others; well who?
You say you have experienced DL who you expect to step in, but I wonder why they haven't already. Who are you talking about?
I believe your LB's and CB's will be fine, but Safety is another question IMO. Don't underestimate the leadership that is required from the S position. Trenton Robinson was a huge loss for us despite the fact that very talented players have stepped up to replace him.

The DL is basically the same next year? You lose 2/4 starters. It may end up just as good, but not because it is 'basically the same'.
The top 4 WR's (as listed in your Iowa depth chart) are Roundtree, Gardner, Gallon and Dileo. Assuming Gardner moves to QB, that means you will be losing 2 of your 4 best WR's. Furthermore, Roundtree and Gardner would both be on the field at the same time fairly frequently, correct? As the X and Z WR's, I believe? With Gallon lined up in the slot. The issue with this is that two tall, deep-threat WR's will have to be identified. I assume Jerald Robinson will take one spot, and Darboh the other? Again, it could work perfectly fine, or it could not. I presume that chemistry issues could exist in the first half of the year, and the pass game could ultimately rely on how well Gardner gels with the WR's.
I agree OL is a question mark, but disagree that it's answered if Lewan returns. If Lewan comes back, it definitely helps, but the entire interior will be very inexperienced (from what I understand). While having 2 inexperienced guards with experienced players at both OT's and C could work, having an inexperienced C between those 2 G's could hurt a lot. If you think there's going to be improvement at those 3 spots, I think you're crazy, and several of your fellow UM posters have agreed that the interior OL has struggled this year.
