ruining the best college basketball rivalry in the country too.

i'm fine with that, i've always been more of a basketball fan anyways, but what's with the teams that are mediocre in both sports? (Rutgers, UVA). I know it brings in money, but it wont be fun to watch.

UNC and VTech would be awesome, best case scenario imo.

North Carolina and Virginia actually have some decent football talent that could help improve the B1G.

Basketball rivalries are not nearly as high maintenance as football rivalries. There are tons of games in a bball season, and plenty of time to schedule a rival in the nonconference schedule. With a non-regional or semi-regional rivalry, it may be a concern, but UNC's proximity to Duke and NCSt pretty much makes that a moot point.

You are absolutely right. Drives me nuts that people think the B1G will ever disregard AAU status (other than ND), or BTN gains, as those are the two main credentials, football program success being a close 3rd.

I think that the B1G actually is positioning itself well to snag ND, interestingly enough. The ACC is clearly going to be the 5th BCS conference, and therefore will ultimately be relegated to the FBS 1-B division for football. Texas/Oklahoma are the key to this, as they give the B12 more credence than a much more traditionally stable ACC. Question is, which school from the ACC makes the B1G more attractive to ND? UNC would certainly help the B1G's national presence, even though it's bball. BC would add a semi-rival, though I'm unsure of their AAU status. And Virginia would add the DC market and a southern recruiting/market foothold.

I think that if the B1G adds UNC, it achieves it's best 'last chance' at bringing ND in, but first the ACC needs to crumble, so that no ND fans are screaming bloody murder when ND leaves the ACC. Starting rumors of taking UNC/Virginia might be doing just that. The Kansas rumors were planted for good measure; to get the B12 in gear with their acquisition of FSU/whoever. If the B12/SEC make the move that finishes off the ACC, then the B1G just might be perceived as the comfy fallback option that was waiting with open arms when ND needed somewhere to turn. This could be exactly what ND needed to have their alumni-base accept it. A national title this year would probably help them feel better about it all too, as I'm sure they'd have some added confidence about entering the B1G.

I think the real achievement would be if Delaney could add ND without adding UNC, b/c I think Virginia would actually fit the B1G better, and would better mesh with the Maryland/Rutgers/PSU 'East' sector.

Kansas is an AAU school. Cuse recently withdrew itself from the group.

I could be and probably am wrong but from what I have heard/read UNC and NC State are even more of a packaged deal then UNC and Duke or UNC and UVA are. UNC and NC State belong to a system, of schools.

VT fans seem to think that the B1G interest in them is legit. This is from another forum, FWIW it’s from a reliable poster who is a VT alum.

“Have been reading the past day or two that we have been talking to both the BIG and SEC pretty seriously. This is from a couple different very reliable guys; one who has a lot of connections to the BIG and Big XII and knew of a lot of conference expansion stuff last year before/as it happened. The other people are connected to the program/administration and for the past couple years just gave token answers and kinda denied anything was really happening on that front. They're saying now for the first time they are hearing of a lot of heavy discussions/negotiations and there will likely be some meetings with conference officials in Blacksburg in the coming days/weeks.”

I would like UNC and Duke but I think that ship sailed when the B1G added Rutgers’s and Maryland. To get those two the B1G would have had to added UNC, Duke, NC State, and UVA.
