    A "segment"???

Have you been to a game in AA? that's like saying Wade, James and Bosh are a segment of the Miami Heat.

The Heat have 16 players on there roster. 3 out of 16 is a segment.

Yep. Last one was when Oregon blew the doors off of the big house. Would you have rather I said percentage? That be easier to argue over?

Yeah, I was thinking starting five, and what they represent. You're correct though. The walverines are much much larger than even 60%. My bad. Now I'm at the turn and my card says 48 and my 15 year old daughter is one stroke behind me and I need to either concentrate or start cheating. So I'll leave this foolishness

Someone needs to find that MLive poll that shows that MSU and Michigan have the same number of non-alumni fans in-state.

Oh darn Michigan has fans who didn't attend or their parents didn't go to Michigan. I am so embarassed. rumor that was sarcasm.

"Of those polled, 81 percent said they have never been enrolled at either school, and among the non-alums group 35 percent said they were Michigan fans and 33 percent Michigan State fans."

Maybe now D.Wags can stop making a fool of himself.

Survey: State's college sports fans split between Wolverines, Spartans

600 college sports fans and Michigan residents were polled between Jan. 24-27.

No, I'll stick to the two page free press poll I'm speaking about which broke the demographics down even further to college educated white collar etc. It is the week of the 99 game. It won't be hard to research, but on my handheld I can't even read your survey. I'm waiting for the idiot that said survey's aren't accurate and not to be believed to jump in and say your "survey" is wrong lol

I will concede that in 99 vs your recent one things could definitely have changed. MSU was stuck in a malaise of football horror in 99, the Izzo dynasty had not quite found it's feet, Michigan was one and a half year removed from a NC and their basketball program wasn't the joke it would become. I can see the casual fan saying I'm a Michigan fan because of their success vs MSU in the previous four years or so before the 99 survey.

You guys with computers it can't be hard to find. The week of the 99 game. Free press. I don't believe it was sports section. Has to be out there. Nigel if you're reading this look it up and pm me. It's there.

"Of the 600 college sports fans and Michigan residents polled"

Not a very good sample size there.

People born into families with no affiliation to either school that don't live within 50 miles of EL will most likely end up UM football and MSU basketball fans, I was one of them for most of my childhood. That's just a result of what both programs have done in the past. All of the South Warrentukians will be born MSU football fans in 20 years if the trend keeps up.

I don't think MSU winning the MSU/UM game will do much to change the affiliation of non-alums very much. I assume that local fans like to support winner and if both teams are winning, then there may be a rare few who side with MSU because of the outcome of a rivalry game. BUT, I THINK most non-alum fans root for the most prestigious team nationally (if both are winning a lot otherwise). I assume it is something bigger and more well-known when they travel that they want to associate with. UM has a recent NC and some other games that are national in scope (Rose Bowl, BCS Bowl, maybe even the OSU game). MSU would have to start to make a name for themselves on the national stage to really sway young unaffiliated kids to become proud Spartan fans. I assume the main point of picking a team is to associate with something bigger and more important...not to go with someone who wins a rivalry game.

True, that's the trend I was getting at. MSU needs to keep being better than UM on the national scale as well as beating them.

Yep. And as of late some people say " I'm a Michigan fan in football and an MSU fan in basketball. Those people are on the bottom of my list. Pick a side damn it. However, I agree Michigan football has the brand name and the casual fan will pick that. Dantonio will have a good five to six years of work yet to start changing that.

Meh. Those people usually tend not to be huge sports fans and only follow a team if it's winning. I don't really give them much thought.

My favorite party store has an owner whose son wears a Michigan cap all fall, he wears an MSU cap right around January. I always ask him what's up with the lid change. He says "change of season". They're out there, I don't know how they can do it. But they're out there.

He said "not relevant to the current program but dantonio is still there". He was basically saying Mississippi State game can't be used against you because Rich Rod isn't there, but Alabama can be used against us because Dantonio is there, but in both cases neither has the same team they did in 2010.
