According to that map, PSU has the largest fanbase which we all know isn't true.

I don't think you read the article.

Yeah but that seems to be the meme from MSU fans. You guys don't seem to mention that Michigan put up 10 wins and was ranked high enough to be eligible. It wasn't just given to Michigan.

Easy now. We don't want Sparty to know that the President of AllState rigged the outcome of the ND, Northwestern, Nebraska, and Ohio State games so he could get us in his bowl game.

This was one of the first couple of hits on google when googling "Sugar Bowl is a fraud."

It certainly could be argued that Virginia Tech’s Sugar Bowl opponent, Michigan, is not the most worthy selection, either. The Wolverines lost head-up to rival Michigan State, and the Spartans barely lost in the Big Ten championship game to Wisconsin on Saturday. Still, the smart money says the glory-starved Michigan fan base will flock to New Orleans in big numbers and Michigan still carries its big-name cachet.

Yes, Rivals is clearly something the general public reads and one article on rivals is representative of the MSM/Public opinion.

According to this article, OSU has you beat, but you might be right. The New York Times is hardly ever on point.

So according to some random guy tOhio has the most fans. Anyways, there's no way Auburn has more fans than Alabama and there's no way that Texas A&M has more fans than Florida.

I'd say OSU definitely has more fans, they don't have a little brother program within their state to siphon away some of more gullible fans.

Not exactly some random guy. Nate Silver is pretty famous as far as statisticians go. Why is it so inconceivable that Auburn would have more fans than Alabama? They have pretty comparable alumni numbers and Auburn is located closer to the majority of the state's population. Same thing with A&M vs Florida. Texas has about six million more in population than Florida. A&M is really only splitting fans with UT. Florida is competing against FSU and Miami not to mention a huge part of Florida's population isn't even from Florida.

I was just kidding. OSU definitely has a larger fan base in sheer numbers because they have Ohio locked down but I'd guess that Michigan has a more national fan base (more fans in most states not named Ohio).

Nah, you got it wrong. MSU's fan base is 80-90!% MSU based fans. Grads or children of grads. Michigan's fan base by and large is the remainder of the state. With the exception of their grads uneducated or largely undereducated but very passionate. That's good for them but I frankly love when I see someone wearing the Spartan swag I know they're a brother from the campus, no explanation needed for their fandom. It's just true, almost spiritual. It's why we suffer MSU football as much as we enjoy it. I know when I see a brother or sister and say "go green" what's coming next. It's almost unexplainable the feeling. I actually feel bad for those who will never feel it.

You're discounting how many coaches? You can't discredit every single one. lol

Nate Silver is pretty solid as far popular statistics go, but he didn't really have much to work with in this study(google search data, population numbers, a random map project with a very small and unrepresentative sample, and random revenue data all mashed up into drawing an estimate of fanbase size). I'd say I could see TAMU having more fans than Florida but not Auburn having more than Alabama, a couple of the other numbers on there are quite ridiculous also. Silver probably did the best job anyone could have but the underlying data just isn't very good.

Alabama has 100K fans at its games and sells out every one. Auburn has a 87K stadium and fails to sell out every game even in 2010. If his numbers are that close between tOhio and Michigan, I'd say I can use Michigan and tOhio interchangebly as 1/2.

It is amazing how MSU only has alumni as fans. I need to talk to a couple of my BILs, several of my cousins, several friends... And let them know that they can't be MSU fans. lol

Look guys, when MSU and um were 6-0 in 99 the Freep did a huge survey on the division within the state. I'm on my hand held at my cottage in Saugatuck for ten days and don't feel like looking it up. I'll research the results when I get home. I'm correct about this regardless of any of us saying "but I know people". ..... Yeah. We all know people who don't fit in. However I am correct in what I said. Start with the Freep the week of the 99 game. Shouldn't be hard to find.
