I think it comes down to rushing yards. Whichever team has the most, wins. UM gives up an average of 134 yards/game and MSU racks up an average of 129 yards/game. That's essentially even. On the other hand, MSU gives up an average of 64 yards/game while UM racks up 257 yards/game. That's a huge discrepancy. Will UM or MSU win that battle? I have no idea but if Michigan can't get the running game going, I have serious doubts we can win it with the passing game.

I'm confident about our offense, we had 162 yards rushing last yard in a very predictable offense. This year we are greatly improved in the passing game and somewhat less predictable, minus Denard throwing ints. The real problem last year was the defense in that game. They ran the ball for about 250 yards. If we can hold them to say 150 yards rushing and Denard has less then 2 ints we will win. It sounds cliche but if we play solid D and limit the turnovers we will win.

Honestly guys, I see msu winning 48-0. Baker, Bell, and Caper will all most likely run for 100 yards each. Cunningham is the best reciever you guys have faced so far, I personally see him with about 200 yards, probably 3 or 4 tds. The stats show that Denard is averaging 1 pick every 3 throws, I also read that mike Martin is suspended for this game and he was the only good player on your defense. It won't be as close as everyone thinks.

Nice msu schtick, problem is this is about spot on accurate for their fans.

  • Doesn't a team get 3 points for home field advantage?

  • I very curious to see how that line moves throughout the week.

Will definitely move closer to 0 due to everyone picking the under solely based off rankings.

  • The way I see it, this game could end up going in any direction. I can see MSU walking it 35-17 or something, I can see Michigan winning it by a similar margin (though I think Cousins will have enough success for MSU to score 20+)and I can see a much closer battle. You look at Denard and how erratic his passing success is and you are looking at like a 14-21 point swing just on whether he slings a few to opposing defenders or not.

Agreed. If Denard has a clean game then it will be close.

If he doesn't... Then who knows.

  • Should be a fun game. MSU has a pretty good defense. Best secondary I've seen at MSU in a while and I think a lot of it will come down to Denard's arm. He is going to get his yards on the ground, that is a given. If he can come through in passing situations, Michigan can win. If he throws 3+ picks, I think MSU takes it. MSU's offense hasn't looked that good, but I do expect them to be able to move it against Michigan. Not with any sort of ease as UM's defense looks to be much better than the past few years, but we will move it and get our points. Cousins needs to be poised and not make any stupid, ill-advised throws. Likewise, UM will move the ball and get their points. Our D is pretty good, but its naive to think we can stop Michigan's offense everytime. We need to get some good pressure on Denard from the front 4. Marcus Rush and Denicos Allen will be key imo. I think both teams will score at least 20. Whomever can limit the stupid mistakes and finish drives will win it.

Trying to be as unbiased as I can here. I think MSU is more of a complete team. Playing at home, I think we get the win. Something like 35-24.

  • Sorry for the delay.

Watched all but the first 5 minutes of the UM- Northwestern game. Wild first half. Thoughts:

    1) First and foremost, extremely impressed with the halftime adjustments by UM. There's a reason they're outscoring the opposition something like 140 - 21 after the half. Northwestern apparently just wanted to keep trying the same thing, and paid the price.

    2) The flip side is that the adjustments didn't come till after halftime. That's not surprising, nor is it cause for alarm. It's very hard to make tangible adjustments on the fly, especially in a game featuring a lot of first half TOs; your D is on the field so quickly that you don't have time to talk things over. We have the same complaint about Narduzzi, but have been very impressed with all of his halftime adjustments.

    3) That said, the first half did happen, and if that happens against a better team, Michigan could have well dug itself a hole that it couldn't climb out of in the second half. Against both Notre Dame and Northwestern UM was trailing at the half; against ND trailed most of the game. The comebacks are exciting, but are not a method of sustainable success.

    4) After hearing a lot about Toussaint I was disappointed in his performance, and really the RB performance outside of Shaw's few carries. 1.8 yards/carry is not going to cut it from your primary back. Northwestern has a veteran, though not particularly athletic front 7, and I thought they did a very good job on the UM O-line. Robinson broke a few runs, but I saw multiple tackles for no gain or for loss. Offensive line had problems run-blocking.

    5) That said, O-line did a great job of pass-blocking, or at least chipping defenders enough to give Robinson time.

    6) Not sold on Robinson as an accurate passer who can win on his arm alone. The interceptions were ugly, and several long completions were of the "jump ball" variety. It's great that Hemingway can go up and get those, but against a better secondary you're going to see a lot of passes batted away, or even more picked off. Robinson can be effective and accurate about 10 yards downfield; after that I really see it being a bit tenuous.

    7) Robinson, and your receivers, do do a fantastic job when plays break down due to Robinson's ability to avoid pressure. Very impressed with Robinson's overall strength for his size; tough kid.

    8) Special teams were not fantastic, though the coverage teams were a bright spot.

    9) No doubt that the overall fundamentals and tackling are better, but they aren't at a top level yet. I saw several broken coverages and missed tackles. Blake Countess may be a very good CB in the future, but I'd limit his 1 on 1 time, especially if the thought is to put him on Cunningham. Blitzing was mixed in well, and definitely confused Northwestern in the 2nd half. Defensive line struggled to get pressure on its own without the blitz though. Has that been going on all year?

Anyways, those are my thoughts (in response to Ducksworth like 4 pages ago). Going to be a fun week of banter!

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • I'm expecting one of those games where it's really not as close as the score would make you think, with an MSU victory. Something like 24-13. MSU has an elite D this year, and UM has no kicking game, which will KILL Mich. Northwestern was able to shut D-Nard down until their lack of depth came through, who knows what MSU will do.
