So, your talent on the field is better, your cooridinatirs are better, facilities are better and history and tradition are better along with much higher rated recruiting classes

Has anyone ever stopped and just shook at the thought of how great Mark Dantonio actually is? Holy cow, I have to say these um guys are correct in regards to all the greatness coming from their school. Theres really only one person MSU can point at to explain the ass whippings that have been handed out lately. Well done

We've only had had top 5/10 classes and great cordinators for a year. You guys may think that Dantonio can keep it up when the storm comes and Michigan has All Americans/All Big Ten Players at every position.

Didn't Mattison have a co defensive coordinator at UF? The harbaugh Michigan connection we know about. These things are very incestous and I believe the split was agreed to by both sides with the ravens. Mattison had a pregnant daughter in ann arbor didn't he? Anyway, it was not his best showing at ND. We can all agree to that.

So what? Urbie didn't have to hire GM. Neither did Harbaugh. Harbaugh also didn't have to promote him to DC after Rex Ryan left. The same is true for Hoke. The reality is Urbie won a NC with GM on his staff at UF. And the Ravens had one of the best defenses in the league the entire time he was there. And GM had very good defenses during both his stints as DC at UM. As for his pregnant daughter, that might help explain why he would want the job but not why he was offered the job. And every coach has down years. Look at Dantonio's and Narduzzi's record at Cincy. Not very good. And in the brief span they've been at MSU, they've already had a 7-5 season and a 6-7 season. Get back to me when UM has a 6 or 7 win season while GM is the DC and maybe I will be more open to your point of view.

Didn't GM's last year as DC there produce like the worst defensive #'s the Ravens had in a long time?

I would put Chavis first. After that, it's probably a close call between Kirby Smart and Greg Mattison. And Manny Davis might be next, though he has a much shorter track record at this point.

I'd put Chavis at 1, Smart at 2, and Mattison at 3. He can increase that ranking if he can win multiple national championships at Michigan.

Please provide the quote where I said we should ignore anything. What I said was it was hypocritical to criticize Mattison for his bad years while giving Narduzzi a pass on his. No coach who is in the business for any period of time has no down years. Dantonio and Narduzzi are no different.

Who said that that was the only reason I'd take Narduzzi over Mattison? I never gave a set reasons, because this isn't a debate; I'm not trying to convince you I'm right, and I told you that you won't change my mind. I even offered to change the subject. So I'll do it again . . .

I think ND goes 7-5/8-4. Miami(Fl) is a trainwreck; that should be a W. USC and Oklahoma will wreck them. MSU/UM/Stanford are toss-ups.

Question is, does Kelly get a 4th year by going 8-4/7-5 a 3rd straight year? Anyone baffled by his inability to find a QB, and by the same token, field a solid D? Skills were completely reversed at his previous stop.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

We've had top 30 classes and obviously not as great of coordinators as Michigan. Michigan has never had a class lower then MSU , and now they possibly have the greatest dc in their history, and we have an unknown. I don't know how great Dantonio is, but for the first time in my life he had Michigan fans like yourself HOPING for what might happen in the future as you did in the above post, while MSU people are talking about what he's done.

    That's insane.

One of the problems is separating the impact of the HC from the DC. How much of Bama's defense is Saban's and how much is Smart's? But I agree that you can't ignore the rings. I probably would put Smart at #2 too. If GM were to help bring another NC to UM, that might change things.

You've convinced me. He's the greatest. Now w're really screwed. Hope Dantonio has another goat to sacrifice so he can keep his black magic up.

That, or him and Narduzzi could just keep building.

That leaves his most recent year at Michigan. His defense wasn't as good as Narduzzi's last year. So I don't think my opinion is that far out in left field.

This was Mattison's first year vs. Narduzzi's 5th? It's scary that GM could turn around a defense that fast to where it was pretty comparable to your established DC.

FWIW, I always thought Charlie Strong got most of the credit for UF's D's. He was the name that always came up regarding coaching searches.

I think Mattison is a heck of a DL coach and a very good DC overall.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

So Toussaint is apparently preparing to play in the Bama game.

Doesn't mean he is going to play. I'll be disappointed if he does play because I don't want to stoop to MSU's level. I think this is just one of those things to get Bama to prepare for and we'll know for sure later.

So how great was Jim Herman. Please don't say you don't remember how he was gushed over. What's he doing now? Funny how OSU turned him from a hero to a scape goat.

The discussion was GM v. PN and you basically dismissed GM because of his time at ND. Sorry, but PN has been the DC of some pretty unsuccessful teams at both Cincy and MSU. GM at least has a whole bunch of very successful seasons at other places to balance out the resume. PN has two, possibly three, and only at one stop. And that was basically my only criticism of PN, his limited resume. I didn't say he was a bad DC, but simply that he needs a longer track record of success to have his name put on the same list as someone like GM. I said the exact same thing about Manny Diaz. And, ironically, it's basically the most common knock I hear you guys make about Hoke.

Edit: If Kelly goes 6-6 or 7-5, I really think he's gone. If he goes 8-4 or better, he gets one more year. Last year, he lost to USF and nearly lost to Pitt. He easily could drop a game this year to someone unexpected while breaking in a new QB. Beware Purdue ... it's a let down game coming off the Navy game in Dublin. Lots of travel, jet lag, short week practice wise. Would not surprise me at all to see the Boilers pull the upset.

Think about it this way. Your coach had 5 years to recruit and groom players and Mattison steps in and is comparable with Narduzzi in almost every category.

hmmm, he helped shape the late 90s defense into national champions, he turned an underachieving Florida team into national champions in 2006. Do you see a trend here?
