I guess this is just me, but I think UM's WR's are pretty overrated. Roundtree was by far the most productive but he really benefited from the Denard fake run play where he would be wide open by 15 yards. No one besides Stonum jumps out at me as having great athletic ability.

Hemingway had a pretty impressive YPC . . . and who else in the Big 10 has a decent WR corp? PSU I guess, but they've gotten almost nothing out of their TEs for the past 2 years, Wisky's got Toon and that's it, Iowa's got McNutt and they're hoping Davis works out (they usually have good TE production, even with a new starter), tOSU would be up there if Posey was eligible for the year, Purdue/Minny can't get their passing O's off the ground and IU's got Belcher back from a pretty good unit last year.

Basically, MSU and UM are the only teams with at least 2-3 proven threats (Roundtree/Stonum and Cunningham/Martin/Linthicum). I think I said it in another post, but MSU's strength isn't that we have a Justin Blackmon/Ryan Broyles type game-breaker, but that all our WRs/TEs are at least "B" receiving threats on an A-F scale. Cunningham's probably a B+, as is Martin (for different reasons, Cunningham's hands/consistency, Martin's big play ability), but the other 5 options are at least "good". Essentially, most teams will have a good CB that can handle 1 of our WRs, but as you go down the line, it's more likely that the opposing team's 3rd and 4th DBs are weaker than MSU's 3rd and 4th WRs.

The TE situation is pretty great. We've got our H-back/blocker in Celek, our seam threat in Linthicum, and our all-around guy in Sims. It also helps to have these guys catching passes from the same guy for 3 seasons. If the OL can get it together (so frustrated with the development, though MD did like their conditioning commitment during the offseason) MSU should have their most efficient offense in a long time.

  • For some reason at work, it won't let me quote anything in a reply. But yeah.

I think Hemingway is a guy to keep an eye on. He's shown little flashes here and there, but the coaches were really impressed with him, and Hoke called him out multiple times. Now, I know the spring player of the year award means nothing, but I think he could be a guy who gets some open looks while teams are focusing on Roundtree and Stonum. It should be fun to watch. And also, Odoms is a sneaky little devil.

Wait, Stonum is back on the team after his 3rd arrest?

Had no idea. When did this happen?

  • Stonum isn't officially back but I have a suspicion he will be. Personally, I think he should sit out at least 2 games, including the night game vs. ND. That should send a strong message, but I don't know what pennance he's served over the summer.

  • My opinion:

Roy Roundtree (RS Jr - 6'0 176) - He's been on a lot of the "preseason all-big 10" lists, and for good reason. He had a great season, but Big M's concerns are legitimate. Most of his big plays were as a result of Denard's fake run and him being wide open, so we'll see how good his route running is. He has also had a very bad case of the drops (see: OSU game, IIRC) which he has to fix.

Darryl Stonum (Sr - 6'2 195) - His case is very well documented, but I think he plays next year. It's also not out of the question for him to redshirt and take the year off, but we'll see. If he plays, he's probably going to be our top receiver ahead of Roundtree. He's more reliable IMO, has great hands, and is a tremendous return man. I want to make an example out of him disciplinary-wise, but we really need him

Junior Hemingway (RS Sr - 6'1 225) - Our most experienced receiver. He's not really shown much, as I said in my post above, and Michigan really needs him to step up to be the third (or second, if Stonum doesn't play) option. I think he has a lot of potential, and I see a breakout year from him

Martavious Odoms (Sr - 5'8 175) - A couple years ago, Odoms was our top receiver. He was hampered by an injury last year (against you, IIRC) and didn't play much of the year. He's a short, quick guy who will not beat anyone over the top, but can take the short passes and make a lot of guys miss. That's a theme with our receivers, who are great after the catch. That's why we really need to recruit more of a jump ball guy in my mind.

These are our best bets for WR, but other guys to keep an eye on are Je'ron Stokes (Jr - 6'0 193) and our slot ninja clusterf*ck of Grady (RS Sr), Terrance Robinson (RS Jr), Jeremy Gallon (RS So) and Drew Dileo (So)

At TE, we have Kevin Koger (Sr) who will be our go-to guy. One of the leaders of our team, he hasn't had much experience catching the ball in RR's offense, but he'll be used a lot next year. He's also gotta teach some young, inexperienced albeit talented guys. Ricardo Miller (RS Fr) was originally a highly recruited WR before things fell apart, but he's bulked up and could emerge as our second TE. Chris Barnett (Fr) might need to take a redshirt year to recover from an injury he has, but he's got a lot of upside

Sorry for the long write-up, I feel like Rocky! lol

Not yet, but rumblings are there's a chance.

Also, it's only two arrests. The suspended license was just a citation and that is being dismissed as part of his plea deal.

    Thanks? lol

FWIW, I like Koger as a pass-catcher. He burned our D a few times in 2009.

I didn't think Hemingway produced as much as he did last year, 32 receptions, 593 yards 18.5 YPC, 4 TDs AND he didn't play vs. UConn, ND or tOSU? That's 3/4 of the season. A full year's projection would be 40 receptions, 741 yards and 5 TDs. Did he have injury problems last year? Sounds like this kid could be a really nice weapon. He had 3 monster games too; Indiana (3 catches 129 yards confused, TD), Iowa (9 catches, 134 yards, 1 TD) and Illinois (6 catches, 104 yards 2 TDs). Seems like when he's on, he's ON. When he's not . . . his next best effort was a 3 catch, 50 yard game vs. Purdue and he had 4 catches for 49 yards in the bowl game.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

    SpartanRocky

  • Don't worry, it was a compliment! I enjoy reading your stuff here and in the Big Ten Roundtables.

And that actually really surprised me. I wasn't aware that he had that much contribution. I stand corrected predicting a "breakout" year, then. He had a shoulder injury that he suffered in the Purdue game, which is when he missed the games. Between him and Odoms being gone for some of the year, that's probably a big reason why Roundtree had such a good year.

Looks like you're only going to lose two WRs then. Any chance Roundtree might jump?

    Macks

  • We'll lose Hemingway, Stonum, Odoms, and Grady, and Terrance Robinson probably won't get his 5th year. Roundtree would need a better year than last year to go pro, which I don't see happening with the new offense, Odoms and Hemingway healthy, and more attention. Him and Denard both need to learn new routes, he probably won't fit as well, and there will be more options at WR

So then in 2012, our WR corps would be: Roundtree, Stokes, Jeremy Jackson, Drew Dileo, Jeremy Gallon, and Jerald Robinson. Which is scary. Hopefully we can add Jordan Payton and Amara Darboh to that list pray

EDIT: Noticed Due51 has Kelvin Grady as a RS Jr, and I'm pretty sure that's incorrect. He's a 5th year senior

Wow. That's as bad as MSU's attrition, though we're comfortable with the guys coming through the system (particularly Fowler and Mumphery). Why aren't you guys taking 3 WRs this year? If Roundtree goes pro . . . .yikes.

I'm really hoping Je'Ron Stokes shows something this year. If we're going to have a capable WR Corps next year, he needs to step up.

    Outside WR:
    Stokes
    Jackons
    Robinson

    Slot WR:
    Roundtree
    Dileo
    Gallon

Not much depth there at all...we really need to hit the WR recruiting hard in 2013.

signature image signature image signature image

    Hoffelcopter

  • I don't think we can fit 3 recievers in this class because of numbers. With the lack of depth on the Oline and Dline Hoke really needed to focus on those areas. Maybe if we hadn't been so lucky in landing so many quality guys on the oline and dline Hoke would think about taking 3 but now its just not possible.

signature image signature image signature image

    WillyWolverine

  • Rocky, it comes down to where Hoke wanted to fix depth. And he chose the trenches instead of WR. Which I'm not arguing with. In a normal class, we probably would have taken three, but we also had a huge need to fill depth at OL, DL, and DB. As long as the two WRs we take are pretty highly rated (our options are basically: Darboh, Payton, Jehu Chesson, Darius Powe, Madaris, and semi-kinda-maybe Stefon Diggs), then I'm ok.

We also have a couple guys already in our sights for 2013, in LaQuon Treadwell (who basically said that he's waiting for an offer and then he'll commit), and ____ (can't think of the first name) Oliver out of TX who will probably be hard to pull out of Texas, but we've made an impression at least

EDIT: Man, I've gotta work on typing faster. That's the second time someone's beaten me to a response while I'm typing.. Time for finger workouts

Roundtree is not good enough to go pro. Definitely need at least 2 this year and 2 the next. 2013 is where the depth chart gets scary.

Rumor on the Duffy is that Madaris is now considering Nebraska after Burbridge picked MSU.

    Macks

  • It was said the other day that Nebraska might actually lead for Madaris now. I think it came from someone at Scout, but it could of been from someone at Rivals.

signature image signature image signature image

    WillyWolverine

  • Pretty sure it was Trieu, who is pretty reliable. Madaris isn't my favorite WR that we're after, and we're in good position with a couple more. That offer really surprised me, as we were in on a lot of WRs and arrived very late to the party for him.

That's probably smart; I guess I was under the impression you guys were taking over 25 guys, and were already done with OL, TE, DL, LB and weren't taking a QB. That leaves DB (I think you have 3 already signed, plus 5 I think from last class, can't imagine taking more than 1 more), RB, WR left. Figure you take 1 DB, 1-2 RBs (not counting your FB here) and 2-3 WRs. Or you take 1 more OL, and reduce the # of another position by 1.

Just seems weird to completely neglect the skill positions for an entire class, no matter how bad your OL/DL are. If I were a UM fan, I'd pray hard the Rawls/Hayes works out well, because it may be another 2 seasons before you get a quality RB (assuming no high level RBs commit this year, there's still time).

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

    SpartanRocky

  • The rest of our class is looking like it'll be 2 WR, 1 DT, 1 RB, and 1 OT. The RB would be Dunn or would go towards taking a second DT. And then Steve comes out with a story about us recruiting Armani Reeves again, and throws everything out of whack. Maybe the RB/DT spot could be another CB?

We'll probably end up with 26 or even 27 spots (Don't ask where those spots are coming from, I have no idea)

signature image signature image signature image

  • SpartanRocky,

We are not done on the DL. We still need at least one DT in this class but hoping for 2. Also, looking for one more OL. that would put us at 23 or 24 right there. Just recently they have said they want another high caliber corner. I still think they are looking for a running back for this class as well.

  • The coaches were saying 25 or 26 a while back. There has been some unsuspected attrition so who knows they might be able to get to 27. There has already been some medical redshirts given so we stand at like 22 maybe 23 available right now. I wouldn't be suprised to see a couple transfers and a couple guys not be given a fifth year.

signature image signature image signature image

    WillyWolverine

  • Possibly. More realistically, 26. There's very infant rumors that someone else just transfered, and people are saying it's Vincent Smith. So between not renewing fifth years, the medical hardships, Kellen Jones, and inevitable transfers, we'll see 26 or 27 IMO
