Actually, after looking it up, Michigan State's ground game hasn't been very good since 2007. The numbers really surprised me. I expected their numbers to be much higher than this.

Yards per game average with national ranking
    2008:130(78th)
    2009:136(73rd)
    2010:152(64th)
    2011:137(78th)

There are two things I gathered from this:
    1. Michigan State shouldn't expect a huge increase in their running game. Under Dantonio, they've been consistently getting about the same amount of production year in and year out.

    2. Michigan State doesn't need a high powered ground game to win. They're going to play the field possession game and beat you with their defense.

Don't look at the season as a whole, hold tight to one game and use that over and over and over...

    1. Looking at the #'s, you maybe right. I feel that MSU will try their best to run to the point that people will bitch at trcmb about Roushar's playcalling. The development of Maxwell and the WRs will be key to prevent defenses from loading the box to stop Bell.

I agree. It’s been over 20 years now, and it’s one of the first things that are brought in every discussion by trolls and non-trolls alike. I’m sure some of us bring up MSU’s transgressions, but that’s only really the trolls who want you to feed into that stuff IMO.

Uhhhh chief? Your name is CWEBB. lol

Seriously? You really rarely see that? I'll take your word that you don't see that, but you'd be very wrong. It's part of the fandom around here.

I don't see where I'm very wrong. I'm not going to look back through 500 pages of torched thread, but in most cases, the only time I see it is after about 5 posts of banter on UM basketball some random osu or msu fan throws out the fab 5 card. Face it, most posters on the net were in diapers when this crap happened. My dad, to this day, will not vote for a GOP candidate for President. Why, because of Nixon. That makes about as much sense to me as digging up dirt on athletic programs from 20 years ago.

What they produced when they played Michigan was 5.5 yards/carry.

You know...the Michigan Defense that was #1 in BigTen rushing defense (BigTen games).

You know...the Michigan Defense that gave up 115 yards/game in BigTen games, but gave up 213 to Michigan State.

You know...the Michigan DL coached by Hoke and Mattison.

Those numbers are slightly skewed considering two of our worst performances against the run were against out of conference teams. I know you're just making a pont(and you're right) but those are a little bit deceptive.

We gave up 6 a carry for 198 to Notre Dame.
We gave up 4 and a half a carry for 207 against Eastern.

Sounds good. Please alert the Michigan football fans that the past is now irrelevant.

I know you used BigTen game stats. As awesome as they make us sound(because we are), I was just pointing out that they're a bit misleading. We're not quite that awesome.

I still can't believe we gave up 207 to Eastern Michigan.

So bad that they gained more yards rushing against your team than any other team you played.

    So, yeah...other than that...

Nigel - You are beating a drum that maybe MSU's run game wasn't so bad last year because it did well against Michigan.

You do know we are talking about how good MSU's run game was because we are trying to predict how much it can improve?

You do realize that the guy who got 167 of those yards is now going to be trying out as a free agent for NFL teams?

You realize that Bell was OWNED by Michigan with a ypc under 3?

Don't point to last year's MSU/UM game to try to argue that maybe MSU's run game wasn't so bad and will be better in the future. Okay?

Ok? The fact is that it’s annoying. We could be having a conversation on the present state of the program, and sure enough a troll comes in and usually say’s something like “you guys can’t compete with MSU, unless you buy some players like Webber”, when its irreverent to the discussion. If we are having a discussion about The Fab 5 then fine, but it gets thrown into conversations for no apparent reason.

Silly me. I thought it was all about the OL vs. the DL (and Hoke and Mattison).

Before this goes on and on and on please tell me you all understand that MSU has a ball control type offense and many pass plays have short quick simple routes. Many passes from bubble screens to quick outs even short wheel routes are nothing more than long hand offs.

    Continue please

Nice win last night blue. I'm interested to see how you guys do in the NCAA tourney. I think um has a good chance at winning the BTT. I'll have to look at brackets when they come out, but I think semi could be Wisky/um with a finals of OSU/um.

If the guys at UMhoops are correct UM is either a 2 or 3 seed and Wisky a 4 for the BTT. Which means we would have to meet OSU in the semi and Wisky would have to be the final. Not that it matters much just thought i would throw it out there.

Honestly Dwags, if you compared how many times Michigan fans brought up past MSU transgressions compared to how many times MSU fans bring up the Fab 5, let alone any other Michigan past transgression, it wouldn't be close. MSU fans love bringing it up here.

Not a flame here but one of the events are real and one is all assumption. The rosebowl team is lumped in with the 92 93 shananigans. And trust me it's brought up all the time in any championship team discussion.

In all seriousness. I could give a rats ass about our past or theirs. It certainly helped them this year in landing the sugar bowl and it helped Izzo last year in keeping his NCAA streak alive. But it doesn't score any points for you. My problem with our school is that our FUTURE was always so damn iffy. That's not so anymore

    You mad?

How many B1G titles does Sparty have total in over 60 years? How many does Michigan have since 1990?

    Not sure if serious.

Iowa ring a bell? Notre Dame this year ring a bell? Alabama ring a bell? Much much much more embarrassing then a 3 point loss to the #1 team in the nation on the road.

But you never answered my question.

MSU has how many B1G titles total? How many does Michigan have since 1990?

You always say we refer to the 1900's. I'm giving Sparty an extra what 40 years, they surely have more right?

Wait even since 2000 Michigan has more then Sparty? 1900's?

But yeh early 1900's where it all happened. Caught us, total frauds. Sparty clearly better.

    Chode.

Michigan would have gotten more respect that year if they had loaded up their schedule with traditional powers Beloit, Ohio Normal, Oberlin, and Ohio Wesleyan. As it was they barely squeaked out wins over Ohio and Vanderbilt (and lost to Penn).

Unfortunately, neither Michigan nor Wisconsin were matches for Yale that year.
