I agree. I saw the thread over on tRCMB about it, completely absurd. They're getting mad because we're comparing our guys to elite SEALs? No, we're trying to be like those guys because they are amazing.

    Pretty much.

No offense to all the good MSU posters out there (you know who you are), but that is a major reason why I could not converse with you on your board. Things are so greatly overblown there it is crazy.

Hoke could make a statement like "our players played like champs today" and I could see a ten page thread claiming that Hoke is saying we are the greatest team ever and we already won the NC.

Yeah, I'm at A&M right now. Depends on your age but barhopping at Northgate is always a great time, I can't really think of any bars that have a cover(Thurs, Fri, Sat are the best days). If you're looking for a good place to eat then there's a lot, it just depends on what you want to eat. What part of campus is your career fare? If you want to know more about A&M you could always check out the Association of Former Students(I recommend it to anyone who doesn't know about A&M).

I'll be doing some random events with the industrial distribution program so I'm not sure where all I'll be.

I'm just curious if there are any landmarks or places that are considered "must visit" on campus.

The Association of Former Students will give you a brief history and help you with places to see on campus. It's hard for me to tell you places to go because there are so many traditions.

I agree with your comments about tRCMB. Theres a group of posters that are anti-michigan completely regardless of the topic/context/etc. Its pretty dam annoying.

Then again, when some UofM trolls come on and derail topics . . . meh.

Anyway, I honestly dont see what the big deal about the tridents is. I think its a bit goofy, but whatever, no different than gold pants I guess. Lets just hope these tridents dont end up on Pawn Stars lol

I also find the hatred of Hoke hilarious. He seems like an OK guy, hasnt done anything arrogant or douchey yet, yet some on tRCMB seem to attack him for anything he does. Its stupid. Reminds me of how some UofM fans hate Dantonio for everything he does.

Hoke has done a good job endearing himself to the UM fan base with things like "We're Michigan" and stuff but it's a double edged sword. He's setting himself up for a potentially huge failure if this team doesn't do well this year. The 2012 schedule is freaking brutal. The hype and expectations are really up there, and while I don't think Michigan will be awful, he needs good results in 2011. 2012 is a monster.

    Macks

  • Besides, I don't think he is actually giving out a pin but an actual trident with the players name on it. It is not a rip off of the pins they give the Seals.

He is not setting hinself up by saying he has high expectations.

The high expectations come from coaching one of the powerhouse programs in the country.

Everyone knows that if Saban, Mushcamp or Brown don't win conf titles (or come close) they have failed.

    Saying it doesn't matter.

I think that bugs MSU fans because they know RR would still be their coach if he had a heisman candidate and his teams kept having a better record. Even if Dantonio goes back to his historical 7 win seasons, MSU will keep him long after bigger programs would cut him loose.

Lloyd Carr was under constant pressure when he lost 3 games. If MSU could pull that off year after year they would be estatic.

So, Hoke is not going to pay any higher price because he said something out load. It just bothers MSU fans because it underscores the high expectations at Michigan and the prominence of the program. A lot of other programs don't have that, but they want it.

I actually completely disagree. Well... mostly disagree.

Hoke has done a good job rallying the troops with classic Michigan coach speak. The old guard that hated RR eat it up, and most of the RR apologists don't really care one way or another... they just support the Coach of Michigan no matter who it is. (Key qualifier there is "most of" biggrin )

However, I don't think he's setting himself up for any type of huge failure if the team struggles this year. While the 2012 schedule is tough, it really doesn't matter too much what he does that year either. (Outside of recruiting that is... which is easily a big deal.)

As long as there isn't another complete implosion, Hoke's going to get a ton more support than RR did, and because of that he's going to be just fine even with possible down years in 2011 and 2012.

  • The reality is anything Hoke says will be taken as terrible by MSU fans.

If Hoke at the B10 presser said "You know, honestly we aren't that good and we'll be lucky to win 7 games", you guys would be laughing at him and calling him a pansy.

Hell you guys have a SIX PAGE thread on a stupid pin Hoke is giving out to his players.

    As well he should.

Look, MSU fans are never, ever, eeeeeeeeeever going to like something a UM coach does, unless it's detrimental to UM's program. If it brings success to UM, well, the worse for us. It's just self-interest transplanted into the college arena.

What he has done though, is provide message board fodder. That's all it is. I doubt the players/coaches give a flying you know what about what he said about winning a championship.

So MSU fans will likely throw that quote in your face on here, even if you win 9 games. Nature of the beast.

What matters in the real world (for UM) is that Hoke shows improvement on the field. That does not necessarily mean Ws and Ls in year 1. That means playing disciplined defense and cutting down on the mental errors. I really hate to use subjective measures, but the "eye test" is the best recommendation I can give to UM fans. You have to feel that the vibe around the program has changed. The Ws will come if Hoke is a good coach, but your '12 schedule definitely sets up for a tough haul.

He'll get 3 years regardless, barring NCAA scandal (if Locksely can get 3 years, Hoke will get at least 3). I think it's fair to judge him (as a UM fan) by his results in 2013.

Just don't expect us to wait till then. Ahh, the joys of rivalries . . .

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

We're working on that wink_msu. Kidding, of course.

I will say that I did enjoy the coverage the rivalry got when we were both ranked going into our game last year. Would like to see that be a #7 vs. #8 match-up in a few years, instead of #17-18.

This guy rocks. Even the misspelled username makes me laugh.

Guy, you think way too highly of Michigan's football team. I know you love sports, but I'm not even this delusional. Your coach went 3-9 in his first year. Then, he went 5-7 and finally 7-6. He got a 3 year shot and was fired. You think that is out of the ordinary? He would have been axed at a lot of programs.

Lets say Dantonio goes on to keep winning lots of football games and we continue to make bowls. Basically, we become a Wisconsin or Iowa type of program. He retires and we hire a new guy from the south that doesn't fit in with our northern culture. Then, he goes on to produce the worst season in our history since the 1800's. Uh, you don't think people will be upset? Like that only goes on at Michigan?

Again, you are my favorite poster, keep up the good work. I love reading the ridiculousness that is your life.

I think MSU would have kept RichRod if he was hired when Dantonio was hired and turned the program around from 3 wins, to 5 to 7 and had the nation talking about your QB seriously contending for a Heisman. (Heck, JLS got more time than RR and his results went downhill instead of uphill each year.)

No way MSU fires RR under the same circumstances.

Your post even supports that MSU needs to have a better program to have those standards. In your post, you have to go into a hypothetical that IF Dantonio can keep winning for YEARS INTO the future like Iowa or Wisco, that MSU's program would not tolerate a Rich Rod type. Actually, you say they would not tolerate a guy who produced the worst team since the 1800s, but MSU doesn't have that type of history. It had a 3 win season this decade. But, once again, if you had Michigan's history, then you would have higher standards too.

You state that after Dantonio (hopefully) builds up your program that you would not tolerate a guy like Rich Rod. But, you would now.

How about this, IF Dantonio's teams go back to the typical win totals of his teams (just over 7 wins a season) and drops a dud in there (like your 2009 record of 6 -7) and a good season in there (like 9 wins), then he could be a Spartan for life.

MSU's standards didn't go up because Dantonio and the program had one good season.
If Dantonio were at Michigan, fans would definitely be happy about the season, but also really bothered by the previous losing season. No MSU fan I have seen or talked to does not think Dantonio is a savior at this point. No one cares about a losing season. That is because of where MSU is coming from as a program.

It bothers you that there is still a gap between the perceptions of the programs. Hoke's comments highlight that to Spartan fans.

(To utilize an over-used analogy, it is the BB programs. MSU basketball fans expect to have NCAA tourney runs each year now that they have established a winning tradition... even if Izzo didn't have a run last year. If the eventual replacement for Izzo struggles, but has a better record each year and finally makes the NCAA tourney his third year and loses in the 1st rd, then he is likely out. If Beilein left tomorrow, UM basketball fans likely would see hope in promise if the next guy could improve each year and get them to the NCAA tourney in the 3rd year. UM would likely wait it out.)

(BTW - How can you accuse me of misspelling my own username? That is just dumb.)
