  • I'd say Mike Hart and David Harris are the best examples of 3-star kids that turned into studs over the second half of Carr's career. Braylon Edwards was also a 3-star I believe.

RR has landed some quality sleepers as well including Omameh (2 stars).

3-stars for a kicker/punter is usually on the high-end. Anthony Fera (is he still with UM), was the number 2 rated kicker in the nation, according to rivals, was a 3 star.

    Fera is Penn State.

For a punter, a 3-star ranking is like getting 5-stars.

Agree on the punter (Mike Sadler, MSU's RS Frosh P, was also 3-stars)

Kicking myself right now for forgetting Hart. Edwards was a 3-star QB commit. I honestly though Harris was higher than a 3-star. So that's 3 in the past 6-7 years.

FWIW, Kovacs as a walk-on is at least a contributor, though he'll probably never be an all-league performer type

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Well Mark Bihl and Ruben Riley were also 3-star starters on the OL. I believe Bihl was with San Diego for awhile in the league, not sure on Riley.

I was using Hart, Braylon and Harris as the top examples. Harris was a lower rated 3-star.

I mean Obi was a 3-star, be he sucks. Carson Butler was a 3-star and a very good TE, just a total moron.

I'm sure you'll see a lot more 3-stars contributing over the next two years due to RR's recruiting. Guys like Courtney Avery, Jirbeel Black (3-star on Rivals), Carvin Johnson, Jeremy Jackson, etc. will probably all be starting by 2012 (and some already are).

That, IMHO, will be a very interesting trend to watch. If Hoke is a good coach, he'll be able to get some of the mid 3-star guys Rich Rod brought in to produce at a respectable level. I'm not saying they've gotta be 1st team All-Big 10 guys, but solid Big 10 starters would suffice.

FWIW, I think Hoke IS a good coach, at least on the DL and as a HC at the lower levels.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

I agree. He is the one recruit I want the most in this class. He really seems to be blowing up and by the time it's all said and done could be a 5* prospect.

In my esteemed completely uninformed opinion . . . . I have no idea. Alabama is a tough competitor when they really want someone, Mizzou is the "home" state school and he's got ties from Saginaw to both MSU and UM. I've read a January decision date, so this is going to be a long haul. I know MSU wants to take 2 DTs and so does UM; I think earlier in this thread (or maybe another recruiting thread?) it was discussed that both MSU and UM are going after Pipkins, Day, O'Brien and Jaleel Johnson and that we'd declare the DT recruiting battle a draw if both teams receive an equal # of commits from among those 4. I know MSU is doing pretty well with O'Brien; I think Day, Pipkins and Johnson are pretty even between the two schools, though Day and Pipkins could end up in the SEC.

I do think the OSU issues are going to help both our programs because of our coach's ties to the state. I really feel that MSU needs to hold even during the summer and have another strong start to 2011 on the field to seal the deal with some of these guys. Our B1G champinoship last year got our foot in the door of some major recruits, but I get the feeling that they need to see some sustained success before choosing MSU. That's the burden of lacking a truly national reputation though.

I don't know if UM has offered/is interested in OT/OG Ryan Ward from IL; it seems it's a 3 team race between Iowa, MSU and Northwestern. He's making a decision at the end of summer; definite area of need for MSU.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • cool stat that we got.

when both teams are over .500, UM holds the series advantage 31-17-3. however, 24 of those games came when MSU was MAC or MSC and on the same level as Albion or Adrian. Since joining the B1G however, the series is 15-12 in favor of MSU. just throwing this out there to get some talk going.

What's the record look like when it's cloudy outside and Michigan State has a left-handed quarterback from Boise?

A surprising 8-0 in favor of MSU. We've traditionally hit Boise hard as part of our national recruiting strategy. biggrin

I did some research and have some more cool stats.
SINCE 1953 when MSC joined the Big 10:

    Total: Michigan 34w State 22w 2ties
    State owned the series from 1953 - 1968, going 10-4-2. SINCE 1969, Michigan holds a 30-12 advantage.

Games played in East Lansing: State 11w Michigan 15w 1tie
Games played in Ann Arbron: State 11w Michigan 19w 1tie

When BOTH SCHOOLS have a .500 or better record:
M 21 (12 Wins in East Lansing/9 wins in Ann Arbor)
    S 14 (9 wins in east Lansing/5 in Ann Arbor BONUS: 7 of State's 14 wins were from '53-'68)
    T 2 (1 in each town)

When BOTH SCHOOLS have a LOSING record:
    M 1
    S 2
All 3 games were played in Ann Arbor

When State has a LOSING record and Michigan has a .500 or better record:
    S 5w (2 in EL and 3 in A2)
    M 12w (3 in EL and 9 in A2)

When Michigan has a LOSING record and State has a .500 or better record:
    S 1 (2008 in Ann Arbor)
    M 0

MICHIGAN has entered the game UNDEFEATED 23 times: 15- 8 (8-5 in A2/7-3 in EL)
    STATE has entered the game UNDEFEATED 11 times: 7 - 3 - 1 (2-1-1 in EL/5-2 in A2)
BOTH TEAMS entered the game UNDEFEATED 7 times:
    S 5 (1-0 in EL/4-1 in A2)
    M 1
    T 1

Bo took an UNDEFEATED team into the game 11 times (including 9 straight from 1970-79)
He was 9-2 in those games.

LonelyStoner will have to tell me which games he's referencing when he cites State's 15-12 advantage since 1953 in games played when both teams are over .500 because I'm not seeing it. (Since '53, there's been 58 games played.
