I know this wasn't directed toward me Steve but i do believe we are a better team than we were last year. I think our biggest improvement is in rebounding and on the defensive end. We were a pretty good defensive team last year but this year at times we are able to really get into people defensively. For example, in last nights NW game in the second half we had a stretch when we were down by like 8 where we really got after them defensively and went on a run to take the lead on the Novak dunk. Our offense hasn't struggled like some people thought it would with Morris leaving. Burke has done a nice job running the team.
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

I think MSU also has a better squad this year than last year.
To take a page from Klima's book . . . Enjoy those wins last year! It was great when MSU was down, but now they're clearly on their way up. Sure UM has recruited better than they have in years past, but look, MSU is just a powerhouse and has everything in order. No chance at UM coming close to MSU in basketball.

Yes. That's my point. Enjoy it now!!! Spartan fans will look lovingly back on the last few seasons. The details about RR, Fickell and the inability to win on the road will be forgotten. (Just like time will forget the details of UM's Sugar Bowl win and it will just be remembered as a BCS win. But, the major difference being that it is just the start of Hoke's tenure and recruiting - which was going well for MD vs. RR- indicates even BETTER days are coming for UM).
So, have some T shirts made and whoop it up...as Dantonio noticed this year "the times they are a changin"
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

This was borne out of a single conversation I had with a fellow alum. He said UM finnaly appears to be a good team and MSU has never beaten a good team (we later figured out no team with less than 6 losses as we could remember)...so why were MSU fans/writers suggesting a win in AA next year?? Why not a toss-up at best? So, I figured I would see if MSU fans would either deny UM will be pretty good next year and that MSU will likely struggle in that game. No admissions yet, but I love the "don't give them an inch" attitude.
I like to argue in a friendly way. It's just fun.
Also, my favorite Dylan album has changed over time but the one that holds up the best for me is Blood On The Tracks. Every song is great. (And the politics of other songs on other albums don't fire up this old man as often anymore.)
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

yea, Klima came in and said that MSU should cherish their most recent Ws because there's no way they'll have a shot at the Big 10 title in the future. I think UM bball is on fine footing and I'm looking forward to a good game on Tuesday.
I was just poking fun at a guy who was convinced going into this season that there was no way MSU could come close to their 2010 success in '11 . . . but now that MSU did well in 2011 proclaims that NOW it's all over.

We have a lot of weaknesses. Our biggest weakness is still our bigs. Horford has been out with injury for a few weeks now and is expected to be out a couple more at least. Morgan and Smot have been inconsistent. Some games they just don't play well at all and other games they are fully engaged in the game and play very well. Another weakness is at times we settle for quick bad 3 point shots. When we run our offense we usually get good shots. Another problem we have had this year is getting into foul trouble. I think every guy on our team other than Burke has had at least one game where they have gotten into early foul trouble and a couple guys always seem to be into foul trouble. Also, we are not getting a lot of production off the bench. Basically, Stu is our only guy giving us consistent production off the bench
The key points to victory for us i would say are we need to have a solid shooting night. Can't be afraid to go to the rim. Hardaway, Burke, Novak, Morgan need to get to the foul line some. We can't win this game if MSU has a huge differential at the free throw line. Then lastly and most importantly we are going to need to fight on the boards as a team. All 5 guys on the floor are going to have to bring their best rebounding efforts.

Also, how do you feel about these matchups that xxmgobluexx provided last night?
PG: Burke vs Appling SG: Hardaway vs Woods? SF: Novak vs Dawson? PF: Smotz vs Green C: Morgan vs Payne
I think he's got our starters right, but I picture Appling covering Hardaway on D. He's a great defender and I think Izzo will put him on there.
Wonder who Thornton will cover when he comes in.

I'm going to be focusing on Novaks. I remember two years ago Raymar Morgan had his way with him. Next year Novaks came out admitted he hated Michigan State and then out scrapped the stoners on our team last year. I think we are going to be physical with him and I expect some good old school physical bball with that matchup. Should be great.

I'll say this much: MSU has been protecting the basketball much better than in previous years. MSU seemed to be good for 15-20 TOs/night for most of the last 3-4 years. Looked bad against UNC and Duke, but have really been efficient recently. That should make a difference.
Biggest key to me (and I admit that I'm not a bball expert) is Draymond Green and/or Dawson being able to penetrate the zone. Green is one of the few MSU plays who can hit a mid-range jumper. O-rebounding is going to be huge for MSU as the UM zone has really forced some bad shots out of the Spartans the past few years.
MSU has had some games where foul trouble has been an issue, but I wouldn't say it's a systemic problem. Going to be a fun game, but I think this highlights why the college football regular season >>>>> college bball's regular season. MSU (or UM) could drop both games to its arch rival and in no way, shape or form would knock either team out of the Big 10 or even National Title picture.
Fun for bragging rights and definitely a quality win for either squad to help with seeding, but that's about as far as the game goes in terms of the big picture in the bball season.

Didn't you make a comment earlier in this thread that MSU only won on trick plays and Hail Marys, essentially saying that MSU just got a few bounces going there way and it led to Ws?
How was Michigan's season different this year? Hail Mary passes to beat Notre Dame. Ohio State missing a wide open receiver. Multiple "jump ball passes" to beat Virginia Tech. Led the nation in fumble recoveries (20), by far the most random defensive stat in football.
The only game that I saw where the bounces didn't go your way was @Iowa.
But UM is going to be better next year.
