Denard Robinson, Roundtree, Molk, Lewan, Omaneh, Schofield.

Woolfolk will probably have a shot to get drafted, as will Demens because he has the potential to have two very strong years

Point #1: In a prior post, I wrote that Mattison hadn't been at a program except ND more than 4 years. I meant as a D Coordinator.

Only once in his college career has he seen a recruiting class go from Frosh to SRs as a DC. So I do indeed question how much building he knows how to do, and how much he just comes in and makes do with the talent on hand; the better the talent, the better the results. I'm sure he's a fine DC, but I don't think he's a miracle worker. I know he's an awesome recruiter.

I'm curious to hear what exactly he built in Baltimore too. Please enlighten me.

By built in Baltimore, I didn't mean he built the entirety of the Ravens defense. I meant he built his schemes and gameplans for his tenure (2008-10) and parts of the personnel.

During his tenure in B-More he added the following contributors through the draft: LB Tavares Gooden, S Tom Zbikowski, DE Paul Kruger, DB Ladarius Webb, LB Segio Kindle, DL Terrance Cody. Obviously not all of them are great, but they have all contributed (minus Kindle who was injured) and are all young. I know Zbikowski has played a lot better in the NFL than most people thought (including me).

During his tenure in B-More he also added the following contributors through free agency (these are only guys who are currently on the team): DB Domonique Foxworth, DL Cory Redding, LB Jameel McClain (UDFA), LB Danell Ellerbe (UDFA),

The following guys had career years under Mattison:
    DB Domonique Foxworth (2009)
LB Jameel McClain (2010) *Turned an UDFA into a productive NFL starter
LB Danell Ellerbe (2009) *Turned an UDFA into a productive NFL reserve and spot starter
DL Haloti Ngata (2008 and 2010) *Two of Ngata's best 3 years were under Mattison (2007 the only year he wasn't).
S Ed Reed (2008): 2008 and 2004 are close, with both being the best for Reed, one under Mattison, one not. Two of his best seasons (at least interception wise) were under Mattison (2008 and 2010).
DE/LB Terrell Suggs (2008): Best overall and most well rounded year.
    DE/LB Jarrett Johnson (2008 and 2009)

    Other Notable player achievement:
LB Ray Lewis: Three very productive years including 2008 (one of his better sack and interception years). *Not a single career year though.

Denard will get a look because of pure athleticism but in my opinion he's a WR in the NFL.

He still has two years to prove what he can do at QB. Pat White was a second rounder a few years ago, I believe. Denard will be drafted without a problem.

That sucks, met him at the MSU spring game, seemed like a good kid. I asked him where he was going to be his senior year, MLB or DE, he plans on MLB.

How much time is he expected to miss? Would a redshirt be burned later in the year to get him some PT?

I think he misses the year on account that he hasn't been able to practice. Lost out on a lot of the teaching opportunities.

The only way the RS gets burned is if we suffer some injuries. You may not remember this, but Baker was supposed to RS in 2009, he had an ACL/knee injury during his SR year. He was our highest regarded recruit in a class with quite a few guys. Then we lost both Caper and Winston to leg injuries against Illinois and Baker was forced into action.

It'd take injuries to Bullough and Hammock to burn the 'shirt this year. Long term, it's good, because it puts 2 classes between Bullough/Hammock and LT. Sucks, because you want your best players out there, but that's football.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Vick opened the door. Running a WCO for a few years will help him immensely.

Agreed on the best case is to have him RS. Some of these kids want on the field regardless.

How many starters on this year's UM team have a shot at the NFL?

    c_woodson said...

Lots of guys have a shot as many players get signed as undrafted FA, but few actually get drafted.

Drafted would be: Mike Martin, David Molk, Taylor Lewan, Patrick Omameh and Denard

All right. Just thinking about MSU's 2007 team vs. UM's 2011 team. Similar transition. Spread to Power. Finesse to Toughness. "We got an MSU/UM guy."

MSU had Hoyer, Devin Thomas, Ringer, Kellen Davis, Ogemdi Nwagbuo, Caulcrick who are still on rosters and also Saint-Dic, Ervin Baldwin, Wiley, and Swenson (K) who played for a bit. More talent than one would expect from a 7-6 team. We beat Pitt, ND @ND, Purdue on the road and Penn State that year.

Well I should of added Michigan's punter, Hagerup, but he is suspended the first four games. Dude is the next Zoltan.

I think a guy like Demens has a shot, but he is more the FA signing, imo. Same thing with Roundtree.

Have him as a handcuff for Chris Johnson in one of my dynasty leagues, and he has yet to see the fields this preseason. :(

    Oh ok.

In that case: Molk, Hemingway, Roundtree, Lewan, Omameh, Denard, Martin RVB, Demens, and Roh.

    ND @NW @MSU @IA @IL NE OSU

    5, most likely.

    That might be pushing it.

I think we win ND, @NW, @IL, and then one of the tough ones (@MSU, @IA, NE, OSU) Winning two of those might be tough.

How many starters on this year's UM team have a shot at the NFL?

    Offense:
    Denard
    Koger
    Hemingway
    Roundtree
    Lewan
    Molk
    Omameh

the others depend (RB on who it is/health, Barnum on how he performs the next 2 years).

    Defense:
    Roh
    Martin
    RVB
    Demens
    Woolfolk

Cam Gordon and Avery are wild cards, both are too young to tell at this point.

    Special Teams:
    Hagerup, maybe
    Not sure yet on Wile.

I also defined shot as: chance to a) get drafted, or b) sign as an UDFA. If you meant something else, let me know and I'll change my answer.

I have NW and Illinois as wins, and then 3 out of ND, MSU, Iowa, Nebraska, and OSU.

    Will be tough, but doable.

The 2007 MSU team should be the model for 2011 UM. Competed hard. Didn't lose a game by more than a TD. Went to a bowl.

Yeah, I just don't see 10-2 unless some teams on our schedule get drastic injuries to their QBs
