I don't know. He might have some success in the Pac 12. They don't play a whole lot of defense in that league so he might fit right in.

He also has his DC from wvu which he didn't at Michigan. Let's see in two years

RR isn't a bad coach, he was a bad fit. The lack of support he got and his disregard for traditions just added to the problems.

AND his complete inattention to defense, special teams and the Oline.

I wouldn't say inattention to defense. I feel he went wrong by not focusing on technique as much as speed and he was a micromanager.

That too. However the Spartan nation lived through a dysfunctional family for decades. We know how bad it hurts a program. For anyone to say that the department wasn't split in ann arbor didn't pay attention.

That is not what I meant at all. He had a helluva a lot of backstabbing, infighting etc. Read the Three and Out book. If 1/3 of that book is true I am ashamed for the perpetrators. I was just saying that you have to look at defense, special teams and lack of OL recruiting as well. Had those been fixed he would have won more and would likely still be there.

Winning cures a lot of issues.

True that unless you have a university president who actually becomes bitter about your football coaches success and potential and doesn't understand how football success can enhance a university. We lived through that....... Twice.

I agree with all three of the things you mentioned that he over looked on the field. Also, the way he left WV was a complete embarrasment and a black eye on UM. The way the president of UM had to put up the money for his buyout - no wonder why there was all sorts of back stabbing on him. The guy is a complete doof.

You are unfairly judging him, I'm not a fan of RR as a coach at all. But the WVU buyout thing was pathetic. The WVU AD told RR before that the large buyout was for show and if he ever left they would shrink it. And Michigan's Athletic Department told RR to shut up about the issue and that they would handle it.

Didn't he have a law suit against WV, and tried to sue them? He didn't really shut up about it. Also, didn't Rich Rod end up shredding a bunch of stuff before he left WVU? I'm asking cause I don't remember how it went down but it didn't seem like a clean break. All I know is the guy left in a classless manner and dragged on his squabble with WVU way too long. I can't really recall specifics but you'd read about stuff in the Free Press well after he switched jobs.

I'm sure there was a ton of behind the scenes stuff, but I can't sort through what is real and what isn't. I don't think much will change my opinion of the guy.

Can you really blame them? They were fed an awful lot of crap, and RR gave them even more. I'm honestly kind of surprised that they didn't form a bias against UM from having to deal with so much false information. I guess they sold a bajillion papers from it...

I believe WV sued him actually for the buyout. If I remember correctly, UM's president promised to pay RR's buyout without actually getting permission from her bosses (and, no, didn't mention this to RR). Of course RR trusted her, and then RR was forced to be the "bad guy" because UM's president would be in shit ton of trouble if it got out that she promised to pay the buyout without permission.
Not that you would be very interested in it, but if you want see dysfunction, read the first few chapters of Three and Out about RR's seperation from WV. It was ridiculous, and it wasn't really on RR. RR never even wanted to leave WV, but he wanted change from the WV administration, and not just increased pay. He wanted little things that seem like no-brainers; like actual control over who gets sideline passes. Yes, WV adminstration refused to let RR control who could go on his sidelines because, as RR put it, the university president and the WV governor could then give passes to their "drinking buddies". He called their bluff and left for UM, and WV was livid. The petty squabbling ensued.
Oh, and the stuff he shredded was scouting reports that he had stashed in his office for a while. Just one of the things that WV tried to blow out of proportion to make him look bad because they were bitter.

Oh yeah. Definitely. Them, and the...errr...major violations?

I don't get the complaints about that. How can you blame someone else when it was found that you actually broke the rules? So it's their fault you got caught? Come on now.

    No! Don't go!

And good point about the papers. I don't think anyone sells a thousand papers anymore. That must be why they got a hard-on from the practice-gate.

Michigan was investigated because a compliance officer did not turn in CARA forms, which were not mandatory (Michigan is one of few schools who did them), not to mention that the forms did not clearly differentiate between countable and uncountable hours. The two reporters, Rosenberg and Snyder, didn't differentiate either. That's why just about all of Michigan's penalties were self-imposed. Come on now, at least understand the whole picture before you accuse some things.

They broke a poorly worded, vague rule that wouldn't have ever been reported if they counted their hours differently.

Correct. They should have used the 240 minute hours.

  • I prefer the never-ending hour. But seriously, if you guys don't want to figure out the difference between a countable and an uncountable hour, then I'm done trying to explain it.

Man, I don't know. I love how everyone is making RR out to be a victim in a big power play. The guy is richer than probably all of us combined and he couldn't deliver the goods. I thought he was a grade A idiot.

Can we all agree on this much?

    Lloyd Carr > Rich Rod
