Michigan fans (the rational ones at least) know that MSU has improved at recruiting, and they won't be going anywhere as long as Dantonio is MSU's coach. However, I think a lot of us feel that if Michigan keeps getting recruiting classes in the 5-10 range, they'll start to beat MSU somewhat consistently due to the difference in talent level. I'm not saying MSU is going to take a step back, I just think Hoke is going to do a better job than rich rod did when it comes to developing talent and making sure Michigan has enough depth. I feel like in two or three years Michigan will start to beat MSU 2/3rd's of the time due to Michigan's improved coaching and better recruits.

This is a viewpoint that I can understand. I agree that Hoke is on a path that is much brighter than RR's was.

While I might disagree on the precise balance, of power, that is as it should be.

I would contend that a potentially worse record this year (as has been mentioned by both sides of the debate) has the potential to slow down the recruiting just a bit. So that instead of top 5 classes, perhaps an average of top 12 might be more likely.

Meanwhile, we'll see if Dantonio can figure out how to mimic Hoke's snakeoil recipe...

Michigan's class for 2013 would rank 17th right now if it was placed in the 2012 class right now. Michigan has room for 6-8 more commits. A top 10 class is all but assured for the 2013 cycle, with a good shot at a top-5 class.

  • So if MSU wins this year, and then the following year, does the um resurgence start in 2014, or further out? I just want to know when the dominance is going to start again. Do we also get to use the excuse that the game was played in AA instead of EL this year, otherwise we would have won?
This year is so important for um to win, I could see some of the posters here needing to be under suicide watch if they lose 5 in a row with teh prospects of heading back to EL the following year.

Could you clarify your question? What do you mean by "happening with"?

I believe Jandy's hypothetical question was how would recruiting for MSU players have gone if Hoke was in AA the whole time instead of RR, including a consideration of the players RR did not offer who ended up at State and the H-2-H battles he lost against State unlike Hoke.

So what do you think would have happened with those players in that hypothetical history?

BTW - I said it is an overly variable speculation, but I am trying to engage the question.

Well, with an 11 win season, including a BCS Bowl win, I feel that the resurgence has already started.

For the rivalry, the resurgance starts as soon as Michigan wins.

    1. Hoke built these classes after RR's horrible record. How would a 9-4 season slow down recruiting if a 7 win, 5 win and 3 win season did not?

    2. Who did Hoke snakeoil? (I always thought that meant "flip" from another school).

When did we start the "silly question" game?!?!? My turn: How will MSU fans react when Michigan wins the MNC in the next two years? How will Michigan fans feel when MSU makes a Rose Bowl? What if the sky were orange?

I think if Michigan picks up 8 or 9 wins than recruiting shouldn't really take a huge hit. However, if Michigan really stumbles and does worse than that then I could definitely see the 2014 class taking a hit. Michigan's recruiting classes will also get smaller, although I'm looking forward to that since it will no longer mean that Michigan is desperately thin at certain positions.

Pretty much as soon as you showed up saying that MSU couldn't beat an 11 win team on the road.

That wasn't a question it was a FACT...and you got it wrong, they can't beat a decent team (ie., 8+ wins) on the road. I never said anything about an "11 win" team.

I'm not sure recruiting would slow down that much. I know we all like to rag on each other's school which is all part of the fun of college athletics. Truth be told though, Michigan should be able to recruit top 10 classes every year regardless of the on-field success. It's an easy sales pitch. There's only a few football powerhouses in the country that compare academically like USC, Notre Dame, and Stanford. Michigan has a grade A facilities, a beautiful campus, and one of the most recognized standiums in the country. Michigan has a built in recruiting advantage over the majority of the country.

Michigan is a name brand like Coke or Pepsi. However, as schools like Notre Dame, UCLA, and North Carlolina will tell you, recruiting will only get you so far. The Dantonio/Rich Rod era has proven that. At the end of the day, Dantonio has shown he can out coach the guy the other side of the feild more often than not and overcome that inherent disadvantage. Will that continue? I don't know but it will be fun to watch.

With that being said, I'm extremely confident in this coaching staff and I think we have a bright future. That's really all I have to add to this topic. Flame on.

Well as long as it meets all your qualifiers its a fact, but its not really a fact fact. This is where you go full r-word and you should never go full r-word.
