That all having been said, I wonder who Hoke's snakeoil supplier is...

Hoke hasn't snake oiled anyone since Kalis last year. Every one of our commits and even all the uncommitted prospects who visit all say the same thing: how genuine and straightforward our coaches are and how they stress academics and just getting along with the recruit. They talk about getting relationships and making sure the prospect enjoys himself. They usually don't talk about football or pressure to commit.

Speaking of snake-oil, Dantonio stole our long-snapper. I wonder who is snakeoil supplier is...

I think this is a good question, unfortunately I am ill-equipped to answer it.

My GUESS would be that Hoke utilizes a relatively similar strategy to what happened with Jones. The thing with UM is that there is going to be a lot more naturally applied pressure to 'hold your spot' (i.e. - commit) due to the ability of UM to get big-time recruits. Hoke being open to recruits about this is not an issue.

My personal, honest opinion is that there isn't anything unethical about Hoke's recruiting methods. I do sometimes wonder how he does it (particularly with situations like Kugler), but I don't think he's breaking any rules. I really wish I was a highly touted recruit for a day, just to see, b/c it is beyond intriguing to me how Hoke has done what he has done so far in some situations.

That all having been said, I wonder who Hoke's snakeoil supplier is...

Ha. I'm glad you are willing to say there is nothing unethical about Hoke's recruiting. Really had me worried there.

I know Kugler seemed surprising to MSU fans because he told someone he was a MSU fan growing up, but he clearly liked Michigan, visited, and knew there was one more OL spot left.

  • Saw the Will Gholston interview on ESPN. Dude says he's ready to take over the defense. When asked about Michigan, he rolled his eyes a little. I think Big Will has a chip on his shoulder about all the BS that occured in the last match up. He was emphatic about winning this upcoming game.

UM - you done ticked off Will Gholston! Not a good plan. This game is gonna be a war.

The line issues you speak off are nothing worse than they were last year. Our starting OL is going to be good. Our depth on the OL is bad. We will probably be ok through our 8th OL but after that it gets sticky. So if we have more than 3 guys go down or both tackles we would be in trouble. Other than that we are fine on the OL. We just didn't have the depth to run a true spring game.

The Defensive line depth is not actually that bad at all. We will probably be able to go 8 deep there regularly.

Our kicker Gibbons was good last year. He is solid from 40 yards and in. Longer than 40yds and our kicking is dicey.

Is it fair to say that depth is the concern on the OL, and that the abilities of the starters would be the concern on the DL?

Campbell, for instance, has reportedly been improving steadily, but I know there have been consistency questions. As he is a projected starter, there might be some questions about that?

I honestly think that this is a phenomenal spot for UM to be in, considering where RR left things. Consider the fact that UM has 3 DL coaches, and you have to like that you have bodies with potential along the DL, just waiting for Hoke/Mattison/Montgomery to mold them.

Conversely, the OL's strongest position are the tackles, which are arguably the most important. The interior might struggle on occasion, but UM's offense isn't really designed for an up-the-gut attack, so how much of a concern can this ultimately be?

I have been impressed with Hoke thus far, let's see how well he continues the team's improvement throughout the year.

    Okay, let me clarify.

What awards has he won that could not have been won by, say, Montee Ball?

    Example: All-B1G 1st team QB.

I know I'm walking in dangerous territory, with a match just waiting for a flame to light it, but I'm really not trying to. I think part of the perception issues with Denard is how the QB position is viewed by different people. Denard has won plenty of phenomenal awards for an offensive player, but NOBODY is denying that he is a great offensive threat. People are debating his skills at QB, which would need to be argued by QB awards.

Please don't flame this, I'm not trying to irritate you. I'm just openly discussing what can be a touchy subject.

This is where i disagree with you and for the most part Spartan fans in general. An offense based on a running QB is a very viable offense at the college level. So, trying to only look at what Denard does throwing the football is silly to me. He is a QB at the college level. A very good QB. His first year he put up over 4200 yards of total offense and i believe 31 or 32 TDS. His second year in a new offense he put up something like 3200yds with 36 TDS. Those are very good combined numbers coming from the QB spot.

To me the QB spot isn't just about throwing the football. It's about running the offense and decision making. Denard is still doing both of those things.

I'm sure Will Gholston ticked off Michigan by punching our LT in the face, and twisting Denard's head around well after he was down.

Every single one of Michigan's commitments have visited Ann Arbor at least once. Unlike a certain Texas OL.

Even Kugler visited Michigan before committing, though as you said Hoke was not there.

Who cares if prospects visit before they commit? What a silly and irrelevant criteria for judging how well a coach recruits.

Hoke did a great job just holding the 2011 class together and an even better job with the 2012 class. And he's on track to have another top 5 class in 2013. Whatever Hoke's doing, it's working pretty well. In comparison, I don't think Dantonio's classes have cracked the top 25 more than once. The last thing Michigan fans should want is for Hoke to start copying the Dantonio recruiting playbook.

Depth for the OL is cause for some concern. I think if we lose Lewan or Barnum at center that would hurt the most. I feel pretty good about our guards and I believe Kalis would be fine as a true freshman at one of the guard spots or RT if he absolutely had to fill in.

It's really hard to tell on our DL because Hoke and company have such high expectations for them. I don't think we will ever hear Hoke say the DL is playing up to his expectations. I mean ever. I think our DE spots will be very good. Roh at one spot and Beyer/Clark at the other. Should see a better pass rush in my opinion. The question at the DT spot is how well they hold up against the run. Black needs to get stronger over the summer and Will needs to get more consistent with his technique.

Your definition of QB is too narrow. Tim Tebow was a great college QB. So were Tony Rice, Eric Crouch and Michael Vick. And so is Denard. Get over it. And you still haven't answered my question - what B10 and national awards has Kirk Cousins won?

Agreed ESPN is a couple tiers below all the other sites in recruiting rankings IMO. I do think it helps being ranked highly on ESPN for National perception though.

People who are just casual fans, and don't follow recruiting will probably never see 247's rankings, or scouts, etc. So having ESPN put it on their website and TV come signing day probably helps in terms of raising the profile of the program.

It doesn't hurt to have ESPN say you have the #1 class to a bunch of future parents, or athletes, regardless of how accurate their rankings are.

    Top talent draws top talent.

(stole that point from NoVaNoles BTW)

Agreed, Nova made a great point.

Gholston benefitted significantly from double and triple teams on Worthy. It will be very interesting to see how Gholston does this year when he is the one getting double teamed on every snap.
