The Official Michigan State vs. Notre Dame Thread

  • Pivotal game for Notre Dame. Kelly could be on the hot seat if he goes 0-3 to start off the year.

Kirk Cousins is looking for redemption after the tough loss the Spartans had during their last trip to South Bend and the Irish are looking for redemption after last years OT loss to MSU in Spartan Stadium from the now legendary Little Giants trick play.

Looking forward to another incredible match up between these two schools. Discuss.

  • Shouldn't be close.. ND is just not a very good team.

The tangibles are in their favor (home atmosphere, must-win), but they just have to stop with the turnovers. If they win the turnover battle, they could win the game, I just don't see it happening. They also have to bench Gary Gray.

Could be close, could be an upset, but probably not. MSU wins 38-20

Thanks great game last night fellas. I thought my analysis of how the game would go down was spot on. I thought UofM's home environment would give them the edge, and I also stated I haven't seen anything out of Kelly yet that tells me he can win a game like that at ND. I stand by that assessment by assessment of Kelly's ability to coach after watching the game. I also think Hoke is a better coach than Kelly.

I'm curious to see what the line will be against ND. Do you think Vegas will make us favorites?

ND looks close to being alright but their turn over problem is huge and their secondary reminds me of ours during the JLS days. They just aren't in position to make plays when you throw at them. They did have that one interception, but most of the the game the guy looked lost out there.

Jerel looked good the other day. I want to see Gholston kick it up a notch as well. I think the Spartans have something really special brewing with our defense this year.

Gholston looked very good this past saturday.

How does Johnny Adams look? Do you think your secondary is good enough to stop passing teams in the B1G?

Not sure about last week, but Adams was the best player against YSU from what I saw (at least on defense).

I'd be shocked if you weren't favored. Line should be MSU - 5ish or more.

I agree about ND's secondary not being very good. They look good with 3 INTs, but Denard was just awful throwing the ball. I could've made a couple of those picks. That #4 guy (pretty sure his name is Gray) was beaten on at least 3 big plays that I remember off the top of my head.

Kirk Cousins should have a field day with that secondary, and your backs are good enough that it'll make the playaction very efficient and hard to deal with. Cousins has a huge day, your RBs have a strong day, and your defense shuts down ND (although Floyd has an inevitable big day).

Gotta say, I'll be rooting for ND very hard, but I jsut don't see it happening

I thought our secondary looked great Saturday. When you hold a team to just one first down the entire unit is playing well. After the dreary play against YSU I actually felt really good about our secondary and Bullough after the game. I saw mistakes made by both, and knew there was room for improvements. Our tackling technique that game wasn't as spot on as it has been in the past, but that has been corrected.

to be honest though, I think we'll have good enough play out of our secondary to take advantage of the turn overs ND has been offering up in the red zone...but few guys are good enough to cover Michael Floyd and Theo Riddick. I expect both to make plays against us.

I also add it's a two way street, Cousins and Cunningham have looked incredible. Cousins is throwing perfect strikes on the deep ball. They are going to have to step it up and cover our receivers as well.

Yeah, #4 was lost out there. Denard is hit or miss on some of those throws, but the guy was poised. I really think a huge improvement in the new system is your coaches tailoring the O to him. They've set up plays where he can be more effective with the throw.

Cousins arm has been sensational so far. He's throwing with incredible accuracy and Cunningham looks like Jerry Rice at points with his hands. The kid is a really special receiver for us, and if ND doesn't get a good DB on him we could do some serious damage with our passing attack.

Root for who you must, it's a natural part of our rivalry. I understand that and is what makes it exciting the contests we have between our two schools.

  • I want ND to start 0-3 sooooooooooooo bad.

But I just think with ND being back home, they're going to put out their best game of the season this saturday.

    I really hope I'm wrong.

The big question is are they a cornered animal or are they dead on the canvas? I think we saw probably their best effort last night, and almost every ND game I've seen with Brian Kelly coach they do some things really well but they are also prone to make mistakes. I expect more of the same next Saturday. I expect a focused team ready to play, and fighting hard to salvage their season.

I agree. It's gonna be a close game.

I just want ND and Kelly to fall flat on their face starting 0-3 lol

Honestly not sure who I think is going to win. Everything is pointing towards MSU winning, but they haven't really been tested.

I think steveschneider is right when he asks:

The big question is are they a cornered animal or are they dead on the canvas?

Whatever the answer is, will tell you the winner.

FYI, we have a really good team this year. I'm not being a sunshine blower when I say our defense has potential to be really special this year. We held FAU to 1 first down this weekend.

I also think my assessment for the Michigan game that I made about Brian Kelly applies to our game as well, I haven't seen anything out of him yet that tells me he can win a game like this. He's yelled at his players for screwing up, when is he going to start being accountable for the poor performances? If they go 0-3 that'll probably happen.

Can ND win this game? With a player like Michael Floyd the answer is yes, but IMO I think we have a better team on both sides of the ball.

My main concern is our special teams fg kicking but other than that our OL looked greatly improved. So that's my biggest question mark at this point.

And Jack Ebling nailed it as well, if we lose everyone is going to say we can't handle the big stage and if we win everyone is going to use that as an indicator that ND is terrible this year.
