The Official Michigan State vs. Notre Dame Thread

FYI, we have a really good team this year. I'm not being a sunshine blower when I say our defense has potential to be really special this year. We held FAU to 1 first down this weekend.

I also think my assessment for the Michigan game that I made about Brian Kelly applies to our game as well, I haven't seen anything out of him yet that tells me he can win a game like this. He's yelled at his players for screwing up, when is he going to start being accountable for the poor performances? If they go 0-3 that'll probably happen.

Can ND win this game? With a player like Michael Floyd the answer is yes, but IMO I think we have a better team on both sides of the ball.

My main concern is our special teams fg kicking but other than that our OL looked greatly improved. So that's my biggest question mark at this point.

MSU is solid, it not that I think MSU is trash, I think ND is better than they have showed so far.

Kelly has won NC's through a playoff system already, winning a regular season game takes a backseat to that.

    Ok...

Kelly has won NC's at Grand Valley in a playoff format. Awesome. He's also coached a team in his second season that has turned the ball over a whopping 9 times in 2 games. Holy hell, we're talking about Notre Dame turning the ball over 9 times. Insane.

It's not surprising. Domers are always on the return to glory path. Lou Holtz said ND will be a 10-2 BCS team lol

Of course. They are an amazing team, one of the best ever. USF and Michigan are just lucky that ND decided to be charitable and the rest of the schedule sucks an ND should win every game easy. ND is on track for a BCS bowl win and will win the national championship going undefeated every year after that. /Lou Holtz world

His routine isn't even funny or shocking anymore. It's pathetic, and that's before Mark May starts hating on the Big Ten.

I don't know how much you can possibly tell from your first 2 games. Your board was panicked after YSU and now thinks MSU is unbeatable after beating a horrible team like you're supposed to.

I think ND could very easily win the game, but they just cannot commit turnovers like they have been doing.

Should be fascinating..I think ND is a bit better than MSU fans are thinking. They have some real talent and IMO are better on the lines than MSU.

I've heard that line for the last 20 years or so about us playing against ND. So many times I've heard once ND works out a few kinks they should be able to handle the Spartans. Or ND is going to be tough this year. I hear these reasons why they should take us down all the time. Our record proves that we play them well no matter what the press, Vegas lines or fans think should happen. One year during the Nick Saban era I was told that Bob Davies was out recruiting State and that now he has "his" players ND should be back on track. We trucked them by 40 points before the first half. lol Even during the JLS and BW eras which were abysmal the one positive note is that we would still beat ND.

There's definitely an intangible factor here which is MSU plays inspired ball against ND.

Did you watch the FAU MSU game? FAU is terrible, but it's clear we improved greatly.

We stopped with the dumb penalties on both sides of the ball, those penalties had nothing to do with who we were playing. Those penalties were just mental mistakes that were very costly against YSU.

We also improved our tackling technique. Both the OL and DL play looked better to me, but it could of been just the benefit of playing a crappy team. I think you're wrong about our DL they are going to be effective against ND, but the OL may struggle but to me they looked greatly improved.

I think they're in the middle. FAU isn't very good, but people are also underrating our defense. YSU scored ridiculous amounts of points last year and they had the perfect system against our defense (quick release for short gains). Holding them to 6 points isn't that bad, especially with the lone TD being scored against a blown coverage by a RS-FR CB who splits his time at WR and was in his first real game in college.

The team looked very sloppy against YSU but they had a good gameplan and we did come out a bit flat. When they established a rhythm in the second half they looked pretty good. Kirk is very accurate and BJ is in a catching frenzy. Dantonio's family matters may have also played a role.

And no offense, but holding a Division I team to ONE first down all game is impressive no matter who the opponent was.

    ---

    Onto the ND game:

They can definitely win. However I think ND have to start strong. If they let Kirk and BJ dictate the game on offense early, then I think the crowd becomes a non-factor and the team loses hope. Our defensive will be tested here. I expect Floyd to be bracketed by Adams and Robinson with Adams and Dennard covering the rest of the field with LB help. Rees has shown a propensity to be very good when unpressured and absolutely terrible when he's rushed. If the d-line can get good penetration then we can force a few errant throws to Floyd. Now, he's a elite WR so he'll get his share, but Adams is arguably the best cover corner we've had in the MD era and Robinson is no slouch.

This game comes down to two things: 1) ND's mentality and 2) Execution

I'll also add #4 better learn how to cover a receiver if they hope to win. lol

#4 won't be playing if Brian Kelly is even a half decent coach.

Well it was brought up on our board, do they even have a better option is the question? If they did wouldn't they have put him in during the Michigan game? He's a senior and he's probably the best guy they have.

BJ is going to dominate him. And then if they try to get safety help over the top Keshawn will burn them. Don't forget one big passing weapon - Dion Sims. He's a serious mismatch for any DB and even LBs can have problems with his athleticism.

Have you heard anything about Keshawn? He got pretty dinged up last game, but from what I saw I suspect he'll be ready to go against ND.

Sims looks like he could be unbelievable as well. The guy's size is amazing.

I heard it was a minor toe injury and they iced it and pulled him out as a precaution. He should be good for the next game. Nick Hill has looked really solid to be honest. I hope Fowler and Jackson are back....but i'm not sure if I want to rush Jackson back from injury for a big game like this. Might be better to go with Treadwell for the sake of gelling.

What did you think of our OL play last week? Granted we were opening up some holes on a pretty terrible team, but I thought just avoided all the off side penalties was a huge step up. Also, I thought technique wise we looked a lot better.

I also think Bell looks like the best RB. All three are good but he just stands out to me.

Those dumb penalties are easy to fix playing at home. Playing in front of 80,000 hostile fans and those penalties and mental mistakes seem to creep back in.

No problem, I don't imagine I would be posting much over there until Michigan/MSU week anyway.

I might be watching the game with some MSU fans. I actually pull for MSU to win this game every year, I hate ND and I like for the B1G to win every game they play out of conference.

  • People really aren't understanding the magnitude of MSU's defensive performance Saturday. No matter how bad the opponent is you never see a team only get 1 first down and 48 yards. I mean the next best defensive performance that day was by FSU and they gave up 3 first downs and 80 something yards to an FCS team. So, though it was FAU you still can't just throw it off as playing a bad opponent.

  • I expect ND to come out like gangbusters in the first Q. If MSU can weather the storm, I like the Spartan's chances. If MSU is down 21-0 or something ridiculous like that after 1 . . . .

Though the ND - UM game was exciting, there was some very sloppy football being played on both sides of the ball for both teams. I don't know how good MSU is right now, except I know they don't suck. That's just about all playing an FCS and a low-level Sun Belt team can tell you. MSU played like a good team should play . . . but all that gets the Spartans is a chance to prove their worth against ND.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.
