London is treading water at best, VT is about to upgrade in a way that we have all been wanting, and ACC coaches have likely been dreading.
VT has 6 players arriving that are ranked in the top 250 on D along in 2013, 3 in this class and 3 that RSed last year...I find it hilarious that UVA folks think they are upgrading talent vs VT. VT is putting more distance between themselves and UVA in talent. And god help you if you start losing the top end talent from your current 22nd ranked class. At think point at least your next coach will have some talent to work with, you start losing it now and you are back to where London started...and BTW, he totally screwed you in not RSing players that were not ready, he had a Golden opportunity to RS everyone that AG didn't, who would have cared if he only won 2 games his first year and 4 his second, at least he would have been laying out a plan...now you are where you are, and he's going to be fired

I understand what your trying to say, but rankings are rankings and that's all they are. I can name numerous kids from all around the country that were 5 stars and were nothing but busts, Just look at Rivals #2 player in the country a couple of years ago Curtis Grant. Going to be a Junior next year and has a total of 7 tackles in 2 years and lost his starting job to walk on this season. I don't put too much faith in ranking. Rivals has Smoke as a 5* recruit, 247 has him as a 4* he's not a 5* recruit IMO, just like I said with the Fuller kid you guys got, 5* recruits should be the most dominating player on the field and should be noticed every play.

For staffs with no history of developing players you have an argument, so for UVA that is just as you say. But at VT we get the most out of our players, so when we add 6 guys in one class that could have gone nearly anywhere in the country that is a significant upgrade to what our coaches are used to working with. We have a walk on that is first team All ACC in Jack Tyler, we had a walk on in Cody Grimm that was All ACC...those positions are now going to be manned by guys with more natural talent, of course they may not work out, but we'll have other walk-ons that may be Tylers or Grimms. Gayle was the 22nd ranked kid in his class.
A 5* player can't do squat if he can't be involved in a game, I watched smoke do nothing against a very average team for 3 Q's this year, and saw him look great once that team was worn down, he had another 5* on the field with him at all times...IMO Blanding was a much better player, but that doesn't mean Smoke won't be good, and it doens't mean Blanding will or will not be an AA. This isn't BBall when a 5* stands out no matter what....
Grant is a bad example, he was a bust in waiting unless he changed his attitude, but the Hokies were just mad cause we were eliminated, right? He was also promised playing time and wasted a RS year, yea, you know how that works out at UVA. Or maybe our coach (one of the old white guys) that was recruiting him realized his ego was better than his talent, and maybe he was right in telling him he wasn't even the best LB in Richmond.

Your coaches get more out of players that aren't highly ranked than the one's that are, that in a nutshell is why you guys have won so many games over the past 10 years it's getting the most out of the players that weren't the top recruits coming out of high school.

I completely disagree. Tech's most productive players have been guys like Tyrod, Logan, Wilson, Ry Williams, Macho, Kevin Jones, Adibi, Vince Hall, Royal, Worilds, Graves, and Hosley. All highly recruited guys. I think you hear more about the walk-ons or two star players becoming great like Grimm, Tyler, Chancellor, and Duane Brown because they had no expectations coming into school and there are few cases (although greater than most schools). But the 4 or 5 star guys we've had are greater in number of players who've been productive.

Logan became the 1st QB in Beamer's tenure at VT to throw for over 3,000 yards and set the single season yardage record at VT in his first year. It's been a difficult year, but that is a reflection of the team, not just him. He's been more productive that many of the players I listed, but the point is they've all had very good careers at VT for being highly recruited guys.
