i don't know how you couldn't take vick if it was just one player. he raised the bar all by himself for the program. corey moore was pretty legit too and i can't remember many vt players before his time.

Serious question. Who do Tech fans see as the eventual successor? Bud or Shane? Who would you prefer?

I believe it all depends on how long Frank sticks around. I believe that Shane would be best suited for the job with his SEC background, youthful exuberance, and passion for recruiting. I do think Bud would make a fine HC but I believe he's best suited for defense while Shane seems to be more of a multi-tasker. I think in 10 years Shane is the HC and Torrian in the DC. JMO

It was never a top 50 coaching job prior to Beamer. Will be really interesting when time comes to replace him

  • Thanks for the answers. I was truly curious about what Hokie Nation thought about the next generation. I know Bud used to be on those lists about every job opening, but in the the last couple of years he was on none. Didn't know if that was because of his new contract or if people lost faith somehow. I do know it's still not "Hokie Defense". It's "Bud Foster's Defense" when it is mentioned on TV.

I think most Tech fans can agree that Bud will never be the head coach at VT.

That one shocks me..... but I guess another good reason for this thread. I thought of Bud as the next generation.

It has nothing to do with coaching. Just a lot of other reasons that he is simply not a good fit for a head gig. If he were going to be a head coach, he would have become one by now. He has all the credentials and then some. And no, for the record im not saying he has ever done anything wrong because he hasn't. Personality wise he just doesn't fit. I believe he's the best defensive coordinator in America and that's probably all he will ever be. (not that there's anything wrong with that biggrin)

Bud and Bo Pelinni are/were very similar DC's. Bo got his chance, how has he done? I guess not bad, but if you think they are similar and Bud would have equal success, would he be your guy? I don't know. I think it's a reasonable compassion that offers a little food for thought.

Bud actually went on record as calling some jobs as "coach killers". That shocked me. I know people with a good reputation can't risk it..... but wow. Heck, Franklin has already brought up Vanderbuilt a little more....
But as I said, I was just curious about the VT feeling. Thanks guys.

  • To answer a few questions, IMO of course:

The current Hoo I would like the most to have as a Hokie: Oday Aboushi and it's not even close. He'd immediately make the O-line much better, and he and Wang on the left side would certainly ease Logan's mind about any pressure coming from that side.

The past Hoo I'd most like to have had: Eugene Monroe. I know it's very recent, but if Taylor had had more time to throw during his career, we'd have a couple more top five finishes and who knows what would have happened during and after that Boise St game.

Who replaces Frank: I think he holds on for at least six more seasons (that would put him at 71 or older, certainly within the realm of possibility), and gets to over 300 career wins. At that point, I think Shane is more than ready to take over. Bud will be at least 59 by the time Frank retires, and I think he stays on as DC and Asst HC for a handful more years under Shane before giving way to Torrian Gray.

    Why Jennings?

I think he's a young playmaker with a ton of potential and a lot of eligibility left. He can do a lot of things with the football; return punts and kicks, and play WR. We're a bit up in the air on the return side, and not exactly deep in the WR corp. I think we have some guys (Knowles) that will surprise this year, but Jennings, after his true freshman season, has more catches than any receiver on our roster not named Coles, Roberts, or Davis.

There is a reason he played as a true freshman, and he has 3 years of eligibility remaining. And I think he's probably a pretty good kid.shrug

I chose these players because they have a lot of time left and a lot of potential, but if I had to select an immediate impact guy, it would be Oday Aboushi, hands down.

Vick has to be the one. While there was talent around him, he almost single handedly got his team to the national championship. And had he not gotten the high ankle sprain his second year (along with Andre Davis being out) which caused him to miss much of the Miami game, VT may have had another undefeated regular season.

I don't doubt it, when he turns off being arden the poster he seems like he might be a good dude, he lives with-in 5-10 miles of me and we have talked fishing...but he is an AWFUL poster. He is what Mr Hokie was when he started posting 6 years ago...when he was 14.

But as said on that board, he is good for killing time when killing it is needed.

What do you Hoos think about the composite rankings? I personally don't like them, ESPN and Scout do nothing in VA so we are using 2 horrible sites for VA rankings. If we are going to use VA rankings we need to add the VA State guys like a Preps + VA papers.

  • Good idea Joe. I dont ever come to the BlueBoard, but I'll stop by now. (at least for this thread). Over the years theres been a good handful of UVA posters that Ive enjoyed talking football/recruiting with. Hope this stays civil and somewhat "homer" free. Rivals has enough of that crap.

To answer the question about who Id want from your team, it would either be your best OL or Jennings. I think our wr talent is very good this year, however, we're going to have a youth movement come next season and Jennings would be a good player to have.

As for recruits, I want Mizell. We definitely offered but really didnt have a shot. I honestly think hes a 5* talent and maybe the best RB in the country. Hope we can somehow flip Teller too, but Im certainly not getting my hopes up.

And as a successor for VT, I think Frank has another 5-6 years and then Shane will take over. I also think Stinespring would make a good HC. I know he catches a lot of crap, but I think a lot of it is unfair. Plus, he wouldnt be the OC. Ha.

I dont think Bud Foster truly wants to be a HC, even at VT. Hes not one for the "politics" of being a HC. Hes got a great gig where he is, and all he has to do is put out his D every year.

That about sums it up. Again, good idea Joe. thumbsup
