I just don't see them getting back to the period of 1980-2002 under the current landscape. They are still a good team, but I don't think they will be elite going forward. I know I am a South Carolina fan and have no room to talk, but this is just the way I see it.

If those are the requirements the only team even in discussion is bama. the U had 5 championships in under 20 years, thats going to be hard to beat. I dont think miami will get back there either but mainly because no one will

I guess you're right. It's not really an issue I'm passionate about, just my opinions. Miami could certainly still have very good teams, I just don't put them in the category with the other school mentioned.
If I was a commissioner and had to put together a dream conference I would pick:
Alabama LSU Auburn Georgia Florida Texas Oklahoma So Cal FSU Virginia Tech Ohio State Michigan ND Penn State
Maybe two others from:
Tennessee (kind of down, but great tradition) Nebraska (small but devoted following, great tradition) Texas A&M (Really for the Texas market and rivalry with Texas/Okla) Oregon (depending on sanctions. They are popular and have been great this decade) Wisconsin (Always solid)

Tennessee was the first to win the BCS national championship. They are 6 wins from the 800 club. They are 6th all time in bowl victories. I just don't see how they wouldn't be included over schools like UGA, ND, and Virginia Tech.... Tennessee may be down, but not for long. Alabama has had their bumps and bruises over the last decade and a half too.

To me the next logical step is who would be in the second tier conference? Assuming Tennessee and Nebraska get in from my list:
Texas A&M Wisconsin Oregon Michigan State West Virginia Arkansas Iowa Miami Clemson Boise State - people would tune in to watch, at least at first South Carolina
Who else?
