The Opening: Final Take

Who shined at The Opening? Who didn't? Which players surpassed our expectations and which played below them? Our analysts take a look back.

  • One interesting note: I thought that A'Shawn Robinson and to a lesser extent Darius Latham improved their stock as offensive line prospects by working out on the defensive line.

  • So I know you guys don't like to comment on what other sites say, so just a quick question. On twitter, the "Godfather of Recruiting" claims that Taco didn't win a rep in 1on1s and was the most disappointing player out there.

I saw videos of 1on1s, saw a scoresheet that listed Taco as tying for the most wins of any DL, and heard you guys say he had a great first day, so this was a shock to me. Do you guys feel like Taco had a pretty good weekend, and did he do anything to help/hurt his rating?

  • Ira Denson was full beast mode.

Watching OJ Howard was just like watching Robert Woods a few years back at the event. Put two guys on him, didn't matter, throw it up, he's coming down with it.

He may have lost a rep, but keep in mind he wasn't padded up. He certainly didn't lose every rep.

I saw him hurdle a taller tackling dummy while he was standing around.

Good to hear he got the first step on the dummy...

  • Texas A&M commit, Noel Ellis, should get a "shout out" for being all over the field for the Field Generals' Defense throughout the weekend (including a stellar 2 Int game off Alabama QB commit Cooper Bateman in the 1st semifinal matchup vs. Superbad. He also had a pick 6.

Steve Elmer stone walled him on all four reps he went against him.

Not Elmer! Staff what schools are serious contenders for Hunter? Also if Smith is one of top 3 players now who are the other 2 and what's the order?

That's wrong. I saw Taco win a couple of reps. He didn't take a lot of reps when I was watching. One rep he won was a quick outside, in move. He's got good feet, and short space lateral ability for his size.

That frame can carry 280+ in time too. He's going to be a big dude in 2-3 years IMO.

Noel Ellis played real well. Quicker than fast with instincts. Texas A&M got a multi-year starting CB IMO.

Denson has as good/powerful of an initial punch as I have seen in a while. He's ascending, no question.

He impressed at NFTC and the Opening.

He made a really nice catch on a downfield fly pattern in traffic. Didn't see him make a bunch of plays, but with his speed, WR/Return man wouldn't be a bad idea. He did tell me he plans to return the opening kick of his true freshman year at LSU when talking to him on the side.

  • Let me preface this by saying I really appreciate all the great work you guys did this weekend. It reminds me why this site is head and shoulders above any other I've been on and why I'm glad to pay for the service here.

However I do disagree with Simmons' take on why Fuller underperformed. I understand that you want to see some wow plays from a guy rated that high but that just isn't what he does. I mean he certainly can but because he's such a great cover guy you don't see those plays simply because the guys he covers arent open and QB's won't test him. I think the reasons you listed why he underperformed is what makes him such a great player.

I'll also say I completely agree with your pick for overachiever. Delano Hill had measureables I don't think most were aware of and they really showed on the field as well. He had incredible range, really broke well on the ball and just flat out made plays everywhere. As a Cass Tech kid I'm almost a little disappointed Michigan didn't offer the kid even though we're pretty set at the position. Loved his game though.

  • @gobigblue21: In the spirit of the "Victor Valiant", I was suprised that Michigan CB commit, Jourdan Lewis, made the Nike All-Opening Squad. Sure he had a couple of impressive picks on the weekend, but he also equally burned several times game in and game out. At the end of the day, Lewis may be headed to Ann Arbor, but he's not the baddest DB in Motown. That accolade belongs to Cass Tech's Delano Hill, IMO.

    WDC_Sp2k10

  • From what I saw and heard Lewis did seem to underperform a bit and I was surprised he made it too. But he also made some plays including one great pick on TV. And the coaches there saw a hell of a lot more of him then I did so I'll go with them.

I'll disagree with you on Hill but I've also seen way more of Lewis than I have Hill. I just like Lewis' size combined with his closing speed and cover skills I think he's gonna be very good. Very, very impressed with Hill after this weekend however and to each his own.

Umm, what? Lewis wasn't easily burned game in and game out. He had a very good weekend.

Delano Hill is a solid player, but if you've watched Cass Tech play (which I have 5 or 6 times) Lewis stands out a lot more.

Not trying to start anything, but the one thing holding Lewis back from being rated higher is his size. 5' 10" 160 isn't anything to write home about as far as size goes.
